Mine were made in China, and they are fine.

What size(number) equivalent is a small?

I don't know, except that I have extremely large hands (size 15+) and the largest size was a perfect fit. That would suggest that they are very close to the common numerical standard across sizes. They also stretch a little OR can be worn with less constriction and still do the job. After a dozen are used, I wash them in cold water and their "new" all over. Good luck.
