Well respected book.
If what you want is a well respected list of sanskrit prayers/mantras. This is an excellent choice. It does not include all mantras/prayers for a given Deity, but it is owned by some Gurus. Of course, qualified teachers will tell you that it's best to have a qualified Guru before adopting a mantram. This is because they are tailed to the individual and set in a particular rhythm for that individual.

How to properly chant mantras
I have an older edition of this book that was printed in 2001. I am a Registered Yoga teacher and in all the yoga teacher programs I took in the past (here in the US) there is very little focus on mantras. Many schools will teach only basics: "Om", "Shanti", "Sat Nam", "So Ham". Part of it could be the fact that not many people are well versed in Sanscrit and there is just not enough time (here in the West) to learn Sanscrit alphabet. During Covid pandemic, I found myself unable to practice yoga asanas in the yoga studio. I missed my student and my quiet space. I found myself with plenty of time to revisit yoga teachings. I re-read "Bhagavat Gita", "Yoga Sutras of Patanjali", "Yamas and Niyamas". I found myself gravitating towards YouTube where I could find lovely mantra chants by Sai Baba (Gayathri Manta and Asato Ma), I came across Dr. Pillai and his institute that specializes in teaching mantra and pujas to general public and of course Sadhguru who has regular YouTube contributions about his Isha institute. I found myself eager to learn more on how to chant, when to chant, how many times I should chant, how to pronounce Sanscrit world properly. I had no guru. I went through all of my books and came across Japa Yoga by Swami Sivananda and my understanding grew exponentially. For anyone who wants to learn more about mantras this book is invaluable. I must say it is probably better geared towards students who already know something about Hindu Gods and divinities. Otherwise, general public may find this tiny book challenging and reader will need to do additional research to better understand certain terms that author uses. Without Guru, I could not have someone assign the mantra to me. But I decided to follow Pillai Institute and listen to Dr. Pillai's chanting and teachings. I now have my favorite mantra and I find it exhilarating to chant on a daily basis. I have malas that I use when I chant and I am incorporating rituals described in the book.

I was interested in starting Japa and this was a great guide
Since I stated a few years back with Japa Yoga, this book has been a great reference and guide along the way. It has answered questions and guided me in the right direction. Swami Sivananda's style is very factual and to the point when he writes, and so this book is concise.

A must for those serious about japa.
This book covers it all - from the process of chanting, the mantras, to suggestions on how to make japa a better part of your life. This book covers every aspect and is a great "how to" for the beginner or someone looking to advance in japa yoga. A quick and easy read, yet powerful and practical.

Devi Mahatmya
It is better first to get familiar with Devi Mahatmyam (Devi Mahtmya) religious text describing victory of Durga over demons.

A great book to learn about japa yoga
This is a great book on japa yoga! Swami Sivananda tells you why to do japa, how to do japa, when and where to do it, and what you can expect from it. He is obviously a great votary of japa sAdhanA, and it shows in his enthusiasm for this practice. He tackles a lot of the common issues that might arise in your sAdhanA (e.g., what do you do if you yawn during japa?). Most importantly, he really makes you enthusiastic about this important practice by citing stories of great sages who achieved the summum bonum of life through mantra sAdhanA. I am really glad to have found this book. I have incorporated most of its teachings into my own sAdhanA, and my mind feels a lot more blissful and quiescent as a result. For best results, I suggest you read this along with Swami Sivananda's other books, such as the one on concentration and meditation. This book in isolation is pretty good, but in combination with his other works, it gives you a more comprehensive view of Swami Sivananda's approach to sAdhanA.
