Buy cheap, get cheap, as they say. I don't think they'd survive a drop to the floor, but any way...They come in a protective case, which is a good start, the thread action is light and smooth, but with a slight backlash straight out of the box, and the barrel locks work. They need setting up, but they come with a C spanner and test pieces. This is where the quality starts to really show. It's very difficult to get the sharp edged test piece and the mic faces to sit square on each other. They really could do with a bit of edge finishing because they feel worryingly rough. I'm going to check them against my slip gauges later and will update this review if necessary. I did eventually get a consistent reading although the ratchet is a little too light for my liking. If, like me, you've been using Starrett mics for over 50 years you'll prefer the "feel" you get with your own touch.All that aside, if you're buying for hobby use, they're still better than the cheap ubiquitous digital verniers that folk seem to prefer these days.
