Good for cat lovers
This review is from a 9 year old. Very good book. The reason why I got this book in the first place was because I am a cat lover. We all have an opinion on which pet is better and I think it is cats. But you are probably a cat lover because you are looking at this book. My favourite bit was when Holly and Tam met Varjak. Overall, very good because it had some funny bits but there were also scary bits. There are some unanswered questions in this book that could have been in this book but I guess that is why there is a book 2.

I think this is an amazing book and I have learnt new things and words ...
I think this is an amazing book and I have learnt new things and words at the same time this is a fun and enjoyable book the complete opposite of boring. When I am free instead of playing with my brother I read and at my bed time I read for 2 hours of this book. I would recommend this to ages 8-9 this is because of the understanding that has to be done. I am a 10 year old girl who read this in year 4 and I brought it again to read it another time. This is an amazing book and I would recommend it to even adults as this is an absolutely amazing and loveable book. But there was a bit too much violence so little kids should not read this. For example the characters Sally bones she has one eye and in the illustration as well in the book they started talking about the sockets and all that stuff so that's why but overall I love this book very much so do read this book.

Exciting and Deep too!
I got the sequel to this first in a library sale and read it to my 5 year old daughter (who does kung fu and has a cat!) It was fantastic! So I ordered the first one off Amazon, and just finished reading it to her last night. She loved it too! As well as being a great story, well written, it touches on the while idea of some people thinking of themselves as 'purer' and more noble than other groups - as in Aryan Nazis and Jews. We are what we do, the story shows, not what group we're born into... Anyone can become Noble through kindness and bravery! The Zen-like wisdom was a great surprise for me too! And with Varjak's dream ancestor Jelal there's a nod to the great Persian master Rumi I suspect... :)

Compelling journey of self-discovery.
Varjak Paw is a Mesopotamian Blue, who loves the Elder Paw’s tales of Jalal, the ancient Mesopotamian Blue who brought the Paws to the Contessa’s home, where the family have lived for generations, rarely leaving the comforts of the house. But, things are about to change as the man with the two fearsome black cats enters their lives. The family turn their backs on whatever dangers they may bring, but the Elder Paw tells Varjak of the Way and that it is time to venture over the high walls enclosing their world, and bring help from Outside. So begins Varjak’s journey into a dangerous new world, where he has a lot to learn about survival, the Way and himself. Effortlessly blending adventure and mystery with the philosophy of martial arts, this is a compelling journey of self-discovery. Dave McKean’s illustrations add to the intensity of SF Said’s gritty tale. Long may Varjak Paw keep the Way alive! Great for fans of Michelle Paver, Derek Landy, Philip Reeve and Robin Jarvis.
