Sven-Saw 60th Anniversary Engraved 21" Folding Saw

I bought this saw after a weekend camping trip where nobody brought any real wood cutting tools. I knew that I wanted something lightweight, compact, and yet it needed to be a solid performer. This saw works very, very well. Took it out the weekend after I got it, and tackled a few pieces of fallen wood. I was very impressed with how well it worked, and am very pleased with my purchase. The saw folds up to a package that is about 22" long, 1.5: wide, and .5" thick, so it's very compact for most environments. A backpacker might want to go with the smaller size, which I think is about 5" shorter, but I can fit this one in most of my packs, so I'm ok with the longer size. Folding the unit to its compact size is super simple, although the post on the end can get cockeyed when sliding it all together. A really minor issue, and easy to remedy, but it can be hard to see what the problem is. Assembling for use is likewise easy. Once fully assembled, and tightened appropriately, the saw is rock solid. On my saw, the blade snugs into a small, thin slot that provides some good stability to keep the blade from twisting. The handle might not be the most comfortable, and I can see it getting really cold, as it is all metal, but it provides a good grip, and feels like I could cut a fair amount of wood at a time. A 4" diameter branch was cut nice and smooth in about 30 seconds, and although I didn't do anything bigger, it felt plenty capable of slicing through branches and logs quite a bit thicker. Overall, this saw has quickly earned my respect, and I look forward to years of service from it. Definitely a buy rating from me.

I spent a lot of time reading reviews and watching videos of this saw as well as the Silky saws. I decided to get the Sven, and I took it on a camping trip. To my surprise and glee, my buddy brought a Silky BigBoy with him, so we were able to test both. The first thing I processed with the Sven was a 4" dry Cedar. I was very happy. Like butter. I then tried the Silky, and it took maybe 50% more effort - still great, don't get me wrong, but I was very pleased with my Sven decision. The next thing we processed was a dead but still sappy 4" White Pine. This was harder for the Sven. The Silky was nicer. I did hear that during my research, that the Silky is better for fresh(er) wood. It's a different blade/tooth configuration. I would definitely say this is true, and I urge you to take that into account when choosing. The BigBoy doesn't stay closed when you close it, and it's slightly heavier and slightly girthier than the Sven. Also, the fresher wood obviously doesn't burn as nicely, so I personally decided to stick with my new Sven - I'd rather look for dryer stuff than deal with a cold fire. But, if you're looking to cut something other than firewood you might prefer the Silky. To be fair, I'm talking sappy softwoodwood. I didn't try a live hardwood, for example. I much prefer the holding angle with the Sven. It's just like what you're used to with a bow. The straght/folding design isn't to my liking, although I think with a longer stroke like on the KatanaBoy it might be less of an issue (and better for certain angles of attack). Though, I'm not sure I'd want to bring that beast out with me for campfire building. But I'd rather use that to build a lean-to or something since that would likely involve more live wood. Back to the Sven. The one thing I could see happening - you lose the wingnut. They are kind enough to include a spare, so just bring that with you. You could also take a really small drill bit to the wingnut and attach a thin wire so it's harder to lose (see Tim's review). I would recommend this larger 21" over the 15" - due to the triangle shape, you start losing stroke length as you go through, say, an 8" piece. So the 15" model really becomes like a 7 at some point. The 21 is still super light anyway, and it's really not that hard to strap it to your backpack due to how thin it is. I personally really appreciated the longer length. The blade is flexible, durable, and sharp. It's what a bow saw should be, but much nicer to pack. I feel good relying on it for warmth and sustenance out there. It's a great bow saw.

I bought this saw for lightweight hiking. What a good decision! It flies through wood like a hot knife through butter. I couldn't be happier. I love how the blade folds inside the bar so that it is completely covered when the saw is stored. Zero possibility of accidental cuts/snags when the blade is stored. The saw can be set up in less than 60 seconds and stowage is the same. The cutting stroke is a good length. I've used some saws in the past where you are constantly hitting the end of the saw and have to change directions often. This saw felt like a good compromise. Obviously it's not a 3 foot blade, but I found it was perfect. I recommend this saw to everyone who wants a high quality and lightweight option. There are perhaps hundreds of different camping saws to choose from, so I had a difficult time choosing one to use for backpacking. I chose this one based on the recommendations of other Amazon users, and I'm glad I did. When I was looking for a backpacking saw, I wanted something that was as close to a real, full-size saw as I could find. This ruled out those chain-style saws (basically a chainsaw blade that you pull back and forth manually), and the other saws which are basically dagger-shaped. I wanted something I could rip through thick hardwood with on a regular basis with no problems. This saw is exactly that: You can grip it with both hands, and you can easily tear right through enough firewood for a weekend camping trip. This isn't some "emergency" saw that will suffice in a pinch, this is a serious saw that you can rely on using every day. When it is folded up, the sharp blade is hidden, so you don't need to put this in any sort of case or sleeve. It is also very solid when folded, it doesn't rattle and the blade will never open accidentally. The folded length is a tad long for my liking, but it's not bad enough for me to opt for the 15" model instead. I may actually get the 15" saw as well, for those times when I do some seriously ultra-light backpacking. One other reviewer also pointed out that he added a washer to the wingnut, and I have to agree. After putting together the saw only twice, there was noticeable gouging in the aluminum from where the wingnut rubs the frame. I added a washer to it, and it is far easier to tighten the wingnut now, and it doesn't damage the aluminum frame anymore. I can't believe they didn't include this with the saw, but it's a very easy fix anyways.

Used it for the first time on our Boundary Waters trip and we cut lots of wood. My son even cut up with ease a fallen tree that was 12” in diameter. It packs up nice and small and is worth the weight in my pack I highly recommend!

I love the Sven Saw. I've had one since I was a kid. They cut great, pack up small and are easy to use. They're just wonderful camping saws. I bought this one as a replacement for my Scout Troop. A note about the prior saw - if you use a Sven Saw long enough and hard enough, eventually the rectangular hole where the silver bar goes into the top of the red handle will wear to the point that you can no longer tighten the blade enough. But it took a LOT of very hard use to get to that point. Literally decades of use and abuse by generations of very inexperienced scouts before it finally had to be retired. Amazingly, the blade stayed sharp that entire time. Oddly, however, this particular company sent the saw disassembled. Specifically, the saw blade was not bolted or riveted to the silver bar and the carry cord was just stuffed in the package as a straight length of leather, not tied in a handle. I say "oddly" because the parts were still all nested together just like they are when assembled. So sending it disassembled didn't save any space or shipping over the assembled (but collapsed) configuration. And while assembly wasn't especially hard, I do have to admit that I only noticed the bolt they provided right as I was about to rivet two of the pieces together. I just don't understand why they shipped it disassembled. So five stars for the saw but one star off for this company's choice of delivery.

I bought this to replace a Corona folding saw in my off-road SUV. I use this saw primarily to clear branches that block the trail or to cut up trees or limbs that have fallen across the trail and are too big to pull clear. Even if I use the winch, some things need to but cut up so they will fit into where I want to pull them. I don't have room to always carry a gas-powered chainsaw, but a fast hand saw works great for wet wood up to 6 inches and dry (dead) wood possibly 8 to 10 inches thick. Bigger than that, I probably don't need to bother it. My biggest reason for replacing the folding saw was that the particular one I had didn't sheild all the teeth of the curved blade within the wood handle. I didn't like the sharp saw teeth in my tool bag. A straight saw (with the handle in a straight line from the blade) doesn't give the best power, but this triangular design is the best of both worlds (folds straight, and opens to a large angle between the blade and handle). The disadvantage of a frame saw like this is that you can run into the limit of the frame cutting through a thick piece. A panel saw (whether fixed or folding handle) can keep going indefinitely. Still, there are some practical limits imposed by how hard I want to work and how thick a piece is going to be while still being narrow enough that my saw length will span it. I feel confident the 21" frame saw will meet my needs. While a considerably smaller panel saw with no frame in the way would also do very well, the folding design of the Sven's frame is such that it has the advantage in compactness. The length won't fit in a tool bag, but the very thin design fits neatly under the rear bench seat in my SUV along with my other long tools (a 48" Hi-Lift bar and handle, an 18" socket handle, and spare 5/8 wave VHF antenna). I added a washer between the wing-nut and saw handle. This provides a bearing surface for the wing nut which does not turn against the Aluminum handle.

Worth every penny. Easy set up, lightweight, easily cut 4-6” rounds. I didn’t pay attention to the total length, was initially startled, but ended up being really happy I got the long one. it was still shorter than my 60 liter pack and worked well strapped down in the outside water bottle pocket. I did one 8” log and the triangle started to be inefficient but I made it through. I took a silver sharpie and wrote insert arrows and blade flipping out arrows for use in the dark because it’s really light and sharp. Cut dry and very wet logs easily, mostly pine. Like another reviewer said- easy to drop the wing nut but you could use a drill and make a loop through it so it doesn’t bounce off into the dark. I’m buying more blades now, very successful 5 days of use near an alpine lake.

Nice size, lightweight, compact and cheap to replace blades... Never leave without it! Seems the blade it comes with is best for dead wood and will saw through thick logs with ease.

I've had this saw for a few years now and love it for backpacking. It's a light saw and cut large wood great. It bent on a push stroke my fault so I hat to replace it. MEC stopped selling the 21 in so I was very happy that Amazon carried it.

lightweight and collapses nicely so is easy to pack and carry....was excellent for canoe tripping

Everyone wants to use the saw to cut something. It's sharp, easy to use, safe when stored and looks good. Will buy again !
