DEWALT DW9116 7.2-Volt to 18-Volt Pod Style 1 Hour Battery Charger

The charger works great and the seller I got it from shipped it on time. However, this review is for anyone that owns a Firestorm PS145 18V battery. Just beware. I bought this charger and said battery (http://www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-PS145-18-Volt-Battery/dp/B0000302V2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1281753974&sr=8-1) for my father who recently told me that his Firestorm battery and charger were fried (though it had been busted for a few years but I was not home at the time as I was stationed in Japan). All items arrived promptly and in great shape. However, the PS145 battery DOES NOT fit into the charger (more on this in a bit). Prior to buying this charger and battery I went through almost every single review I could find (I originally started from the PS180 charger page that led me to this charger) and nothing suggested that this battery would not work with this charger so I was in for a surprise. At first I thought maybe one of the items I ordered may have been dead on arrival so I had my brother bring in his 18V Dewalt battery to check the new charger. Charger lit up so I knew it was working fine. However, since he only uses Dewalt and we only have this one B&D battery, I had to find a way to make sure the battery wasn't faulty. So I grabbed some copper wire, stripped the tips and basically just made an extension to connect to the battery and the charger lit up. So now I know both items are working fine. I compared the Dewalt and B&D battery and it was almost the same. (BTW, the 18v Dewalt battery works in the Firestorm drill; it just won't latch) The only difference being the notch at the stem/post of the battery. The Dewalt was centered but the B&D was off to the side. And making sure that the notch was not actually needed, I sawed it off. Now it fit a lot better but it still won't charge. Just so happens that my brother has a spare DW9116 charger that he isn't using but here's the thing. I put the B&D battery in it and it actually charges. However, I put it into the exact same charger that I just bought, it doesn't. The only difference between the one I bought and my brother's backup charger was the year it was manufactured. His was 2007 and the new one was 2010. Other than the date on the bottom of the charger, it was exactly the same yet it charges in the older one but not the newer one. Anyone that knows why please leave a comment. I am not exactly tool savvy. To summarize: 18V DeWalt charges in 2007 DW9116 Charger and 2010 DW9116 Charger (obviously, since it was made for it) 18V B&D PS145 Type 3 (with the notch removed) charges only in 2007 DW9116 Charger but NOT the newly ordered 2010 DW9116 Charger. *Also note, the B&D battery fits like the Dewalt battery in the 2007 charger but is still tight in the newly ordered one. Dewalt fits the same in both chargers. My guess, for some weird reason, is that the contacts still aren't touching in the new charger. I don't know how this is possible with what I already described. So for now we are using my brother's charger and the new one we just bought is now his backup, but if it really comes down to it, I'll probably just jury rig an extension of the charger contacts.

My old Master Mechanic battery charger, which I have had for years, finally bit the dust. I was about to order a replacement, just like it, when I happened upon this DEWALT 7.2 - 18v charger. The price was right and I figured I'd be ready for a possible future purchase of another battery tool, probably at a different voltage. This charger covers all the bases and is a lot faster than the original that came with my 12v Master Mechanic drill. After careful research, I determined that my drill was manufactured by DEWALT for True Value Hardware Stores Master Mechanic brand and so the charger would work with my batteries. Additionally, the charger has a reconditioning program, which will bring old batteries back to life. I had one such battery and tried this charging technique, which amounts to leaving the battery in the charger for 8 hours after the initial charging has been completed. This is not a miracle worker, but it does add a little life to an old battery. Mine would go flat about 3 minutes after charging, but now lasts about 12 to 15 minutes. Not great, but it will delay the purchase of an expensive new battery for a little while. I paid $39.00 for this charger and consider it a bargain. Be aware that this charger is an older model and may not be around much longer. When I clicked on this one a message popped up saying that a "newer" model was available. When I checked, the "newer" model was about twice the price of this one.

I purchased a Black & Decker 14.4V Firestorm Drill and Flashlight set several years ago.. I was very pleased with these tools, but the original NiCaD batteries slowly lost their capacity over time. Then one day, the cheap charger that came with the set finally quit working. I found this Dewalt charger on sale for a good price, and I ordered it along with 2 new 14.4V NiCad batteries. The Dewalt charger works great, charging the batteries in less than an hour. It even managed to "resuscitate" my old batteries and I was able to use them as spares for quite a while afterwards. This charger will accept a range of battery voltages, and I have used it to charge several different ones over the past few years. I would highly recommend this charger to anyone having the older style Black & Decker or Dewalt NiCad batteries - It will work much better than the inexpensive charges that came with many tools, and will also lengthen the life of your old batteries.

This Dewalt Charger works great and it has many features that make it probably one of the best chargers out there. This charger can actually refurbish a weak DeWalt battery. It is compatible with batteries from 9.6 volts through 18-volts. Probably the best feature of this charger is that you can leave your battery battery in it without having to worry about the charger killing your battery like so many other chargers out there do. Mamufacturers of many chargers warn that the battery has to be removed after a certain amount of time to prevent damage to the battery. This is a terrible inconvenience and the cause of many batteries failing after a short life span. This charger has a tune up mode also that reconditions the battery after it has been in the charger for eight hours or more. Afterwards it automatically converts to trickle charge, so the battery is not damaged by leaving it in the charger for a long time. Diagnostics LED indicators allow you to see at a glance the status of your charge. by looking at the flashing LED red light you an tell if the battery is charged, there is a problem with your power supply, the battery pack is no good and one very intelligent feature if the battery is too hot or too cold the charger will let you know that it is not charging till the temperature of the battery is optimal for obtaining a good charge. Having said all these wonderful things about this charger there is one small negative. This charger will not charge some Dewalt batteries that have L shape connectors. The Dewalt DC9310 charger has all the great features of this charger plus it charges both types of batteries (L shaped connections and straight connections). I hope this helps every one in their search for a great Dewalt Battery Charger.

I purchased this unit as a replacement for a faulty Black & Decker PS130 charger which belongs to an older B&D Firestorm unit. The DW9116 specifications and the unit's form factor appeared compatible with the PS130 and thus far the unit has worked perfectly to charge my older PS130 batteries. I have also used newer PS130 batteries (which are larger and thus have a longer usage time) with success. As specified, charge time is about an hour and also has the added versatility of charging numerous DeWalt batteries. This unit can be purchased in retail stores at a hefty sum of $50 or more. I highly recommend purchasing it through Amazon Marketplace as a new unit can be acquired for a mere $20 or so. My only complaint with the unit is that DeWalt literature does not list the PS130 batteries as being compatible with the unit. I assume that this is due to marketing decisions. Please note that although it is reasonable to infer compatibility for the PS130 battery from the technical specs for the DW9116 charger, I have not confirmed this with either DeWalt or B&D so use this knowledge at your own risk!

I own a Black & Decker 12V cordless tool set and the original charger fried itself (literally smoke and all!) I was going to get a replacement but read online that this one is compatible with the Black & Decker batteries (I have the PS130 packs). Let me tell you, this charger is FAST! Less than an hour to charge one of my batteries which are pretty old. I can't even use up one battery before the other is fully charged from being completely flat. The "tune-up" mode is nice too, you just leave the battery in the charger overnight and it does its thing. It's not a miracle cure, but I have noticed that my batteries are holding a slightly better charge after doing this a few times. The indicator light is also useful as it tells you if the pack is charging, fully charged, there's a powerline fault, the pack is bad, or if it's gone into it's "hot pack" delay (it's smart enough to not cook your batteries). Overall, it was a great purchase and I would recommend it!

I can verify that this charger will bring back to life the 18v version of a Black & Decker Firestorm battery too! It brought mine back to life after needlessly buying a new battery. This is really significant for us 18v owners because Black & Decker does make a "kill proof" charger that reconditions batteries but it is not available for the 18v version! So this is your only prayer of giving your batteries new life. That's certainly better than messing up the environment by (1) throwing away a battery that can be rejuvenated and (b) causing someone in the world to have to manufacture a replacement. My dead battery was manufactured in 2000, so it was old but not ancient. I only use it once a month, so I would guess there is more life in it!

I inherited a Firestorm drill and a box full of batteries but the Black & Decker charger that was in the box was shot and would not charge any of the batteries. After reading some reviews, I went ahead and purchased this charger to see if it would work on any of the old batteries. The first couple batteries I tried were giving me the fast flash indicator which means throw them away and buy new ones. The rest of them all took a charge but on a couple of them, the charge would not last more than a few minutes. I tried chaging these overnight, and the charge lasted longer, but not much longer. On three of the batteries they took a full charge and the charge lasts for a long time. It seems the more I discharge and recharge these used batteries, the longer the charge lasts. My only complaint is the Firestorm batteries fit very tightly into the charging socket in the bottom of the charger, and I have a dickens of a time getting the battery back out of the charger. This may be caused by some slight difference in size between the Dewalt and Firestorm batteries. It works fine, does what it is supposed to, and I would probably buy another one if anything happened to this one.

Worked as well as the original. I use both to keep 3 batteries charged under hard use.
