This is not a "soft" netting like a soft fish net, for example. This is made of plastic. The material itself comes folded, so it obviously bends, but it is definitely firm enough to stop fish. We've had it on the top of our tank for at least a year and are very happy with it. It's easy to feed the fish right through the mesh and the added light has helped the plants be much happier. We had a glass top before, with the little plastic stuff at the back of the glass. That plastic stuff had become pretty clouded and the plants at the back of the aquarium were NOT happy. We bought a window screen frame kit from Home Depot - they come in various sizes and colors - and that is our "frame" for the mesh. It works great. Fits right into the top of the tank and rests on the ledge that the glass used to rest on. The only down side to the mesh is that the water in the tank evaporates faster than it used to. We just keep a close eye on it and add when necessary. I highly recommend this as a solution. **Q: Is this like egg crate light diffuser? I need it to make a diy marker holder** A: No it is not. It is more like netting or window screen material. **Q: Can this be used inside the tank?** A: I did not try inside the tank. It is made of nylon. I was planning to fabricate a frame for the netting to cover my fountain to keep leaves and debris from falling into the water. I gave up as the fountain is of odd shape. **Q: Can this be used without a frame?
