Wonderful story collection
Michael Morpurgo is a fantastic writer for children. I’m reading these books bit by bit at bedtime to my 9yr old, but I’m enjoying them as much as she is. The stories all include an element of humanity, and touch on some difficult subjects; animal cruelty, war, child abuse, the death of parents, immigration, to name just a few. These all seem like heavy subjects on paper, but the stories are told so beautifully and with such skill and humanity that the characters jump off the page and keep the reader gripped. Morpurgo introduces children to the cruelty of the world, both past and present, but always presents an alternative to that sadness and each tale is ultimately heartening and positive. But don’t forget your tissues! If you like Morpurgo, I’d also heartily recommend Morris Gleitzman’s stunning ‘Once’ stories, introducing children to the Holocaust, told from the point of view of a Polish Jewish child, Felix. The stories pull no punches but will make you laugh out loud as well as break your heart. Both authors have prompted many probing questions from my daughter, and some in-depth, interesting discussions.

Attractive books to educate and inspire young readers
Great book collection. Came well packaged and quick delivery. Books are immaculate and have lovely artwork on covers. I bought them for my child as he is reading Kensuke's Kingdom with his class. At the age of 9 he could read this independently but engages more with someone there to listen and take turns. The books are well written and hopefully we will make our way through the collection, taking it in turns to pick the next one to read.

swapped out a book
Bought this box set for one particular book. Set arrived next day but that particular book was the only one different to what was advertised. 9byr old gutted as had started reading this somewhere else and wanted to continue it. Will now have to order it separately.

I am swept away, carried away, flown away in mind, heart and body. ❤️ My 14-yo daughter and I are loving these stories together - but honestly, I would have read them myself even if I didn't have her to share them with. First though for sharing with a younger audience: I highly, highly, highly recommend getting these. In our increasingly transactional and somewhat emotionally flat and materialistic society these books will let your young reader experience LIFE, love and compassion for all living, a sacredness for life, and choosing passion, friendship, empathy. I read a lot - and much 'heavier' literature: the thick classics etc, working myself through most Nobel prize winners, and yet, these books are simply wonderful stories. Morpurgo manages to tell stories that reads like a complex classical piece of music: emotional notes that take you high and low, on every other page without feeling contrived or overly sentimental. These books are for a younger audience, which makes me admire him as an author even more. He manages to tell stories of such important and deep themes, with the greatest questions we face in life, unceasingly from birth to death, but told in ways that speaks to the heart, hearts of any age.
