You remember Gauntlet, don't you? Between bites of pizza or slurps of soda, you played as a warrior of light slapped into an endless series of randomly generated dungeon levels, where you fought a slew of evil denizens. Not too long ago, Gauntlet suffered the fate of many classic games: It was given a major facelift and reinvented for the '90s. Unfortunately, Gauntlet Legends wasn't a particularly good arcade game, and it isn't any better on the N64. Those of you unfamiliar with the arcade version of the remake will at least be familiar with the unchanged premise. You still act as one of four characters (warrior, valkyrie, wizard, or archer) who make a stand against a seemingly bottomless reservoir of baddies. All the while you'll collect treasure, play with magic, and dish out the hurt. However, there have been some additions to the formula: You'll now be able to buy stuff with that treasure; levels now have themes; and you'll have to go up against bosses at the end of certain stages. And now our little elven archer buddy is a she. Gauntlet Legends takes advantage of Nintendo's RAM pak, but don't expect it to look nearly as good as most other games that do. It seems as though there was a polygon shortage around the time of this game's development, as everything has a real flat look to it. Gauntlet Legends tried to take the birds-eye-view concept of the original and transfer it into a 3D environment, but this simply doesn't work, and you end up playing essentially the same old game with prettier looking backgrounds. Even though my character was now climbing volcanic mountains, exploring temples, and trekking through the East, I still would have preferred the basic, randomly generated 2D dungeon. Maybe there was just something special about the carbon-copy levels contained in the original that made Gauntlet so enjoyable. (Or maybe it was because I was twelve. Who knows?) The gameplay hasn't changed. You're still meandering about, opening doors, collecting treasure, and killing everything around you. And, just as in the arcade version, you don't even have to hit the attack button if you don't want to - it'll automatically strike enemies for you when you get close. This makes the game extremely one-hand friendly, and it takes the challenge of out playing. Although there's a new money system that lets you buy power-ups, I found that I was instead collecting power-ups and selling them just to buy my health back. And on the audio front, you'll be sick of the God-like voice that reads all the obvious game hints for you by the second level. In fact, there's really nothing great about the sound in the game. The music is mediocre at best, and the sound effects are repetitive. Gauntlet Legends boils down to another top-down fantasy button masher. There's nothing innovative here, and the game is neither enthralling nor interesting. There's no real motivation to complete the game, and the reward you receive once you do makes you regret the time you had invested in the game. Unfortunately, this game is another piece of evidence that indicates that some classics should be left well enough alone. --Ben Stahl -- Copyright ยฉ1999 GameSpot Inc. All rights reserved. A great classic! I loved playing this as a child ...
A great classic ! I loved playing this as a child and I had to get my hands on another copy and I don't regret this purchase. A noticeable difference between this version and the PS1 version is content and graphics. The basis of the game is that you play as a character class; Wizard, Archer, Warrior, or (The guy with the axe) I forgot the class name sorry. You can customize them via colors and name. It's really fun since each class has its own set up strengths and weakness. The main thing is to collect all the rune stones, fight bad guys and restore every thing back to the way it was. The boss monsters are really cool to.

Gauntlet: A Legend
"Gauntlet Legends" is a simple yet surprisingly entertaining game geared more towards teens. Based off of the original Midway classic "Gauntlet", originally an arcade game that came to the NES, "Gauntlet Legends" is still the same smash-em-up type of entertainment, but drastically improved. COMPARISON In the original, the player would have limited choice in his character, and would always start on the first level. Every level was basically the same, kill as many enemies as you can, while moving through levels that soon begin repeating themselves. However, in Legends, it behaves as an RPG, and is based more on a system of levels and bosses. The player may not only choose his character freely, but also his color and outfit. The levels still have that basic "kill everything" mentality, but it seems to have a little more purpose and focus, and it is better disguised. Each level gets progressively more difficult, but you can go to each one at almost any time. You don't even have to complete the first world to progress to the second! THE GAME ITSELF The fun mainly comes from using your character, choices are warrior (strong hand-to-hand), wizard (strong magic), elf (fast), and valkyrie (balance, armor), and going throughout the levels destroying everything. Various objectives and items improve fun and replayability. Each character has four outfits (colors) to choose from, and they each have a set of specials tailored to them and to certain situations. For instance, the wizards medium special is perfect for bosses, and his strong special is good for a line of enemies. It's a lot of fun to bash those baddies over and over, and the levels you have already completed will become more difficult as your level increases! CAUTIONS As fun a game as this is, there are a couple things of which to be cautious. The storyline is based on the idea of going through the levels and eventually defeating a large demon named Skorne. This, along with the undead enemies you fight, the wizards and magic, and small (poorly animated, barely seen) poofs of enemy blood, could pose objection for a variety of reasons. What concerns me most is the atire of most of the female characters. Most are very revealing, and one of the unlockables (the falcon) could hardly be said to be wearing anything. These female characters can be avoided for the most part; warriors and wizards are all male, and if you choose an elf or a valkyrie, which are all female, the yellow are a lot better than the blue, red, or green, and don't aquire the falcon. Overall, this game is not for younger players. Ages 13+ should be fine, as long as they stay away from the non-yellow female characters. OVERALL "Gauntlet Legends" is a load of fun. If you need a release for all that tension, grab your level 50 warrior and smash some orcs. A plethora of items allow free use of things like fire breath or amulets that increase attack strength. These definately increase the fun. Skorne's levels are the best, as they are chocked full of your character's soon-to-be victims. Big fun if you like big bangs or causing lots of destruction.

Gauntlet Legends N64
If your looking for a nostalgic experience there is nothing better than this baby. Playing 4 players just like the old days with my friends really does bring back those great childhood memories. It came used and worked normally but if your game does not load on your screen when you turn it on be sure to blow inside the cartilage. Good quality, quick delivery.

Does not play
Took a shot and placed an order for this game knowing I wouldn't be able to play it right away. I'm pretty sure it's to late to send back at this point. Tried it on two systems and never worked. You would think they would test before selling but what do you expect from the internet?

Never the same
I bought this game in hopes of experiencing that arcade feel, not that this wasn't a fun game its just that it wasn't as exciting as the arcade version. If your looking for a semi-entertaining game with wizards , and knights then i recommend this game but if if its for that old arcade feel i don't recommend.
