The definitive story of desertcart.com, one of the most successful companies in the world, and of its driven, brilliant founder, Jeff Bezos. desertcart.com started off delivering books through the mail. But its visionary founder, Jeff Bezos, wasn''t content with being a bookseller. He wanted desertcart to become the everything store, offering limitless selection and seductive convenience at disruptively low prices. To do so, he developed a corporate culture of relentless ambition and secrecy that''s never been cracked. Until now. Brad Stone enjoyed unprecedented access to current and former desertcart employees and Bezos family members, giving readers the first in-depth, fly-on-the-wall account of life at desertcart. Compared to tech''s other elite innovators -- Jobs, Gates, Zuckerberg -- Bezos is a private man. But he stands out for his restless pursuit of new markets, leading desertcart into risky new ventures like the Kindle and cloud computing, and transforming retail in the same way Henry Ford revolutionized manufacturing. The Everything Store will be the revealing, definitive biography of the company that placed one of the first and largest bets on the Internet and forever changed the way we shop and read. Review: Excellent book - not to be missed - An extremely well researched, almost biographical account of desertcart.com, and its legendary founder Jeff Bezos. Aided by dozens of interviews (including some with Bezos himself) with people who came in close contact with Bezos, the author has built an in-depth profile of desertcart and Bezos. The author traces the journey of desertcart right from the birth of the idea in the mid-1990s and takes the reader, often in excruciating detail to where it stood when the book was published in 2013. A 'must read' book for management students, corporate watchers and anyone interested in business excellence and success. Review: Great Book, Slight Damage - I received the book with a slight dent due to delivery mishandling, but the overall quality is quite good. I haven't read it yet, but based on my expectations and the general acclaim, I'm satisfied with my purchase. 'The Everything Store' by Brad Stone promises to delve into desertcart's journey from its humble beginnings to becoming a global powerhouse. I look forward to exploring its insights into Jeff Bezos's visionary leadership and the company's impact on e-commerce and beyond.

Great Read!
📘 Review: The Everything Store by Brad Stone ⭐ Rating: 4.5 / 5 If you’re even slightly curious about how a scrappy online bookstore turned into one of the most powerful companies on the planet, this book is wildly worth your time. 🚀 What the Book Is About This is the inside story of Amazon’s rise — from a garage startup to a company that reshaped shopping, tech, logistics, publishing, and even how we think about customers. It’s not written like a boring corporate biography. It reads like a high-stakes drama full of big bets, brutal decisions, and relentless ambition. At the center of it all is Jeff Bezos — portrayed not as a simple hero or villain, but as a hyper-intense, long-term-obsessed leader who was willing to be misunderstood for years to win decades later 💡 What Makes It So Good 1️⃣ The “Customer Obsession” Mindset You really see how Amazon’s famous principles weren’t just posters on a wall. The idea that customers come first — even before profits drove decisions that looked crazy at the time but genius later. 2️⃣ The Ruthless Side of Innovation The book doesn’t sugarcoat things. Amazon’s culture comes across as: • extremely demanding • data-obsessed • emotionally tough • not for everyone It shows the human cost behind building a giant. 3️⃣ Long-Term Thinking on Another Level Quarterly losses didn’t scare Bezos. He played a 10–20 year game while competitors played 2–3 year games. That mindset shift alone is worth the read if you’re into business or leadership. 4️⃣ Fascinating Business Battles The fights with: • publishers • Walmart & big retailers • early investors • internal leaders feel like strategic chess matches 🧠 Who Should Read This? You’ll love this book if you are into: • Startups & entrepreneurship • Business strategy • Leadership psychology • Tech industry history • Understanding how big companies really work behind the scenes It’s especially eye-opening if you work in e-commerce or corporate environments — you’ll start recognizing Amazon-style thinking everywhere ⚖️ Any Downsides? • It leans heavily toward the business side, not personal life details • Some sections get dense with operational details • You may finish it both impressed and slightly intimidated 🎯 Final Take The Everything Store isn’t just a company story. It’s about vision, obsession, patience, and the cost of building something massive. You come away realizing: Amazon didn’t happen by accident. It was engineered — deliberately, aggressively, and over decades. If you like books that make you think differently about success and scale, this one sticks with you long after you finish.

A fascinating journey of the biggest shop of the world
Many Indian homes do have at least a container full of the water of the holy river, the Ganges—called Gangajal—as a religious symbol which is believed to bring peace and good luck. Things have changed a bit lately. Nowadays, most Indian homes do have something which reminds us of another great river. These are the cartons of the biggest shop in the world, Amazon. Earlier, we used to go to the shops. Now shops have come to our doorstep. The credit goes to a man of bald head and average height who started his journey into entrepreneurship with a simple and impossible-looking goal—to create a store which sells everything. In other words, the everything store. This book, “The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon,” takes us through the cinematic journey of Amazon from starting in a small house to becoming one of the biggest companies in the world. This journey is full of twists and turns like a mountain road where the car could fall into an abyss if the driver was a little careless or unlucky. There are many memorable things about this journey. I would like to share a few of them. When Jeff decided to leave his well-paying job to work on his business idea, everybody thought he was crazy. He was very successful in the hedge fund company where he worked. His boss took him for a walk and told him that the business idea was good for somebody who did not have a good job. His parents were also not sure about his decision. But they put a big amount of their savings into his company as an investment because they trusted their son, if not the idea. He did not act overconfident and told them frankly that his business had a seventy percent chance of failure. From the beginning, Jeff was clear about his mission. For him, customers were God, and he was an incorrigible fanatic. He could go to any length to make his customers have a good experience even though he displeased his employees and sellers a lot of times. He had learnt this policy from the autobiography of Walmart’s founder, Sam Walton. This policy was the reason customers kept coming back to the store and ended up making it gigantic beyond imagination. Even today, he personally checks emails about complaints from customers. And he is ready to forego a profitable business if it creates inconvenience even for a single customer. Although Amazon was extremely good to customers, the company was extremely bad for most of its employees. If you Google Amazon’s work culture, you will find dozens of articles sharing details about how poisonous it is. People left Amazon in droves to join companies like Google from time to time, but it hardly bothered Jeff. After all, people in greater numbers were making a beeline to join this company despite knowing about its toxic work culture. Reason? The rising price of Amazon’s stock. The company gave them a good number of stocks which could make them rich if they survived there for many years. Amazon did to books what Apple had done to music. Amazon made books available to people all over the world in digital form by bringing an amazing device called Kindle. I remember purchasing my Kindle device as soon as Amazon entered India, probably in 2014 or 2015. But I made my first purchase from Amazon USA probably in 2008 when I purchased the mega collection of cartoons published in The New Yorker. The book devotes a special chapter to how Kindle came into existence after many trials and errors and how it captured the market. There were many eBook readers in the market before Kindle, but they were not good enough to entice book lovers. That’s where Jeff saw an opportunity and capitalized on it. He was himself an insane book lover, and that could be the reason why he started his business by selling books and devoted many years to adding a new milestone to the world of books by creating the most efficient eBook reader. The book teaches one thing which everybody in the business arena should know. It’s not enough to come up with a brilliant product. It’s equally important to spend lots of time and energy marketing it and convincing people that the product is good for them. Most of us are quite okay with the life we are living, and we will add a new and better thing to it only if somebody pushes us to do so. That’s why marketing plays such an important role in the success of a brilliant product. The book ends with a story about Jeff Bezos which sounds very Bollywoodish. Jeff’s mother had divorced his biological father when Jeff was three years old. Since then, they had not made any contact, and the biological father knew nothing about what had happened to his son. When the book’s author, Brad Stone, found him, he was running a bicycle store. He was quite shocked to know that his son had become one of the richest people on earth, whom he had seen on TV a few times without knowing his connection to him.

Awesome read!!
The time when someone says “Amazon”,the first thing that comes to our mind is the online retail giant situated in Seattle rather than the river basin of South America.Amazon has been scaling new heights everyday, with the resemblence that its CEO Jeff Bezos becomes the richest man on earth.Amazon is the biggest online retail company in the world, and reading a book about its journey just drives more excitement. Why you should read it:This book is more for business minded people trying to understand how to scale a company, how to decide whether or not to enter new business and understanding online retail in depth. But the most unique feature of amazon company is its focus on customer satisfaction. The book also tells the past and present life of Jeff Bezos to understand how the values of a leader influences the culture of a company. Summary:The following are the points/procedures which I felt were unique and decisive in Amazon’s journey. 1).Amazon follows a flywheel business model:It believes that if one chain of business gets accelerated, the whole business gets accelerated. For example:In earlier days,Amazon focused on accelerating the divisions of distribution and logistics and thus now its paying off by increase in number of sales. 2).Amazon,very smartly understands how an expert in that domain does business(like apparel or jewellery) and then tries to Amazoned (low cost, high selection) it for a lower price. 3).The most striking feature of Amazon culture is its Focus on Customer needs, desires, problems, etc. In simple words, Amazon is obsessed about customers and this culture has been driven by its humble CEO Jeff Bezos. 4).Amazon is always in the hunt to identify new sectors for disruption like the personal voice assistant Amazon Echo or its new video streaming business Amazon Prime Video, this gives Amazon an edge over other traditional companies. 5).The real secret to Amazon’s success is its ability to play for the long term.Amazon assures its investors that in the long term,it plans to be industry leader and thus will be in a dominant position to acquire profits. 6).Amazon also takes advantage of its position to leverage better deals from the manufacturers. This obviously gives them the edge over other retailers to acquire more customers and hence, drive more sales. Conclusion:Amazon is a innovative company which focuses on customer satisfaction and disrupting old sectors with technology, and people believe that it would be the first trillion dollar valued company.Reading this book will help you understand the whole business processes of amazon and the importance of long term in business world.

Flow with the Amazon in this book!
Finally, I completed reading this book and I must say that the author has followed the Amazon journey very deeply. I cannot say that the book was entirely focused upon Jeff Bezos and the Amazon company, but it gives you insights about the important changes that took places in the dot com era. It clearly shows the effects of ignoring innovation. Amazon fought really hard during the tough years of depression and you can thank to Jeff's long sight vision for this accomplishment. From Amazon, we can understand the importance of caring about your customers in true sense. Throughout Amazon's journey, they are having single motto of giving the best prices and experience to their customers. And, in order to achieve this, they can fight the world. One of the important lesson that I learnt was that you create your own destiny. Jeff's biological father was not successful in life but on the other hand Jeff has excelled amazingly in his field. So, we should never blame our genes or the family for what we are. Amazon started right from the Garage with 3-4 people and rose to multi billion business. A lot can be learnt from Jeff's personality too. He is able to balance his personal and professional life perfectly. And, in his life, his mother and wife has been supportive, always. Vocab is used nicely through the book and I was able to learn a lot of new words for sure. This is a true masterpiece for all. thanks!

Well written chronological bio of a genius who produced something which many thought was impossible
Inspirational biography on the man who created the largest and successful online retail store in the world at a time when very few thought it would work. Inspite of several failures and monumental accumulated losses in the early years the protagonist persisted and with hard work and intellence created the online wonder we all know by the name of "amazon".

Compelling and mlnuanced
Compelling and nuanced. Comparable to Ashley Vance's Elon Musk: slightly less inspiring, slightly more detailed, more about the company than the person.
