The diverse oeuvre of Gustave Doré—illustrations, paintings, sculpture—combines with biography and critical essays and attests to the artist’s enduring impact on contemporary culture. Proclaimed "the most illustrious of illustrators," Gustave Doré is best known for his engravings, which appeared in editions of the Bible, Dante’s Inferno, Poe’s The Raven, The Adventures of Don Quixote, and even in Hollywood, from King Kong to Seven. Yet the extent of his genius remains largely unknown. Here, along with his renowned illustrations, his paintings and sculptures are also examined, bringing to light the rich diversity of his talent. Using watercolor, vivid oil paint, or sculpture, he demonstrated mastery in a vast scope of media, and in treatments ranging from monumental historical tableaux to landscapes to modest compositions. His work transcended techniques and eras, covering an inexhaustible range of subjects from Europe to the United States to Russia and revealing his insatiable curiosity. This comprehensive monograph accompanies an exhibition at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris from February 18–May 11 and at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa from June 12–September 14, 2014. Thats one of the things I love about Amazon
Bought this on a whim. Thats one of the things I love about Amazon. The prices on things like these huge books are so great that you can take the risk and get them and if they are not amazing, its ok as you didnt pay the earth for it. But this was. Its gorgeous and curious and a great addition to my collection.

Could have been better
I was amazed that a catalog for an artist like Gustav Dore was fabricated with such a low quality images and visuals. Mainly because the book originated from the heart of the Museum of Orasy which hold the largest collection of academical art. I mean I was expecting satinated paper and better image color printed. But I guess they where not thinking about that . Mostly it looks like a low budget catalog from an exposition done in 70s or so . Although Dore is mainly know for his illustrations his paintings and sculptures are of the first order in fine art . But they didn't get treatment they deserve in this book. Out of contrast images ,lame colored, and badly edited pictures. Sorry is not worth the price .

Out of the Bargain Bin: A Deluxe Monograph Befitting Dore's Talent
Finally, a monograph that provides a fuller appreciation of one of the greatest artists to make engraving their primary medium. The majority of books on Gustave Dore are bargain bin editions that collect his most popular plates for Dante's Inferno, Milton's Paradise Lost, and the Bible, accompanied by the matching passages. Or books that collect work from a number of shorter sources -- like The Ancient Mariner by Coleridge -- and less popular full-length projects, a good example of which is Orlando Furioso -- a medieval epic that is a loose continuation of the story told in The Song of Roland -- for which Dore devoted a huge amount of time and effort, creating hundreds of engravings for it's many characters and narrative tangents. His published existence beyond the grave and the discount racks has been distinguished by at least one excellent French-language book, 'Guatave Dore: Un Peintre-ne', which, as suggested ironically by the title, was a retrospective of his painting career; his ambitions as a painter were frustrated by vaguely hostile critical responses and public indifference. The Somogy release makes a good case for Dore's talents as a painter being underappreciated by the fickle French art-crowds, unimpressed with the illustrator's attempt to change hats in a post-revolution society that was still rigidly heirarchical, in many ways. A victim of typecasting. This new volume on Dore, published by Flammarion and written by 'Metal Hurlant' co-founder and French comics great Philippe Druillet, looks at both aspects of his artistic output. There is no doubt, however, that his legacy has will be defined by his engravings. Only Albrecht Durer, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, and Max Klinger rival Dore as print-makers, and all three artists combined did not produce the number of engravings Dore did... by his own account a "mere 100 000 drawings by the age of 33". This English translation is a typically beautiful oversized hardcover from Flammarion, and at 330 pages is a much more in-depth look at this important artist. His style and subject matter have a very broad appeal, and this book is recommended for anyone interested in art.

Not the same presentation
The cover was not the same as advertised. For $80 you’d expect to receive the same presentation as the book listed. The book itself is nice quality but doesn’t come with a protective sleeve.

Ein schöner Bildband
Die abgebildeten Werke sind von guter Qualität. Mir gefällt auch, dass Dorés Werk teilweise den Arbeiten anderer Künstler gegenüber gestellt wird. Gute Gliederung
