They seal pretty well...I am satisfied with them and use them for flour, sugar and coffee. I do not think you will be disappointed with this set if you decide to purchase it.

I purchased these a month ago, and the bottoms say hand wash only. Are mine different or is the website description here inaccurate?

Mine say hand wash only also. I would not recommend dishwasher for this item. It is pretty chip resistent but I would not take the chance.

How wide are the openings?

The actual inside openings are 6” or less. The largest is slightly shy of 6”. Both large and medium are plenty wide for flour and sugar, respectively, if that’s what you’re using them for. I absolutely love them.
