Homer called it a divine substance. Plato described it as especially dear to the gods. As Mark Kurlansky so brilliantly relates here, salt has shaped civilisation from the beginning, and its story is a glittering, often surprising part of the history of mankind. Wars have been fought over salt and, while salt taxes secured empires across Europe and Asia, they have also inspired revolution - Gandhi's salt march in 1930 began the overthrow of British rule in India. From the rural Sichuan province where the last home-made soya sauce is produced to the Cheshire brine springs that supplied salt around the globe, Mark Kurlansky has produced a kaleidoscope of world history, a multi-layered masterpiece that blends political, commercial, scientific, religious and culinary records into a rich and memorable tale. Review: Excellent - This book is a great insight into our history - particularly since it is not a history of kings and queens but a history of commerce focused on a single product. Review: Informative and easy read. - Though the book is a reference history of salt for foodies yet it is worth every penny it is paid for.

Brilliant read!
Enjoyed reading this detailed book. If historians, economists, epicures and chefs meet at a bar, the likely outcome of their conversation will result in this book.

A good reference
I love the brevity of the content in the chapters. Although it must have been difficult to keep readers interested, I think the way content has been arranged is engaging. I wish there were more images to describe some of the complex procedures in the book.

Product quality is very low. Pages are thin and look like seconds print

Historia alternativa
El libro intenta hacer una historia paralela, contandonos la evoluciรณn del uso y comercio de la sal, y el impacto de รฉste en la economรญa global del periodo. Interesante, merece la pena echarle un rato

Salty
This was a great book that led me down a wormhole of food history books.

Very good book
This book is like a very long article on salt. The history is overwhelming. I've been looking for a reference book like that and I don't know how I missed it. Arrived on time. I enjoy reading it. It's a book for general readers, don't have to be an academic to understand.

Great read about civilisation
You want to read about salt? Wrong book. You want to read about how salt affected civilisations? You've come to the right place. A great in-depth read and analysis of human civilisation; empires grew and empires declined because of salt.

Who Knew?!
Salt! There is a history of salt. I mean why wouldnโt there be, right? What a great read, with style, compassion, and a contagious interest and passion for the subject, if not those along the way. 100% recommend.
