Box is sturdy and the card pictures engage the interest of students. Have used with both elementary and middle school SPED students and they find the game fun and ask to play it. It works for both a fun math game and a social emotional learning activity. The game is mostly a combination of Go Fish and B.S. The rules are easily adapted to different skill levels (run strictly like Go Fish for students who need a lot of support, or include the rules about everyone putting cards face down and choosing for students who need less support.) There are also three pie cards that are "duds." They can be left out and the game played without them.

Most natural and engaging gameplay for the "math games" we've tried so far. It's legitimately fun for myself and my 10yo and 6yo. My 4yo can't do the addition but he doesn't want to sit this long anyway. We added house rules to play until a designated number of sets are made instead of getting through the whole deck. Although it didn't feel so long that it was boring, we want to be able to play often and I can't do that if it takes an hour to get through. It's reminiscent of go fish in that you ask for the cards you need. The main thing you need to do in your hand is make sets. And the part that keeps it engaging is bluffing about who has the dropped pies. It's a great game, honestly.

Very fun and great review of math skills. Easier than check the fridge but my students love how it’s a bit different!

What a wonderful game. I wanted to help my children learn addends of 12. This opens up for so much discussion of “how many more cards do you need” and multiples (one set that makes up 12 is 4 4 and 4. My child does math drills at home and it has helped her time and correctness. Both young ages love playing this game. They love the poker face and have learned strategies such as if a player asks for cookies and didn’t put down a set they must have some so I can be sure to pull from them since they still have cookies in their hand. We bought these because of the raccoon Clumsy theif game and wanted to move from addends of 10 to 12. We still play both games and they are the favorite in the house. Can’t wait to get the others. Seriously. But this game. You won’t be disappointed. Would also suggest this to teachers for centers. Grades 2-4.

This game helps kids practice adding to 12. It can mean adding three numbers together to get 12 like 6+3+3. My first grader loved the game and is doing better at mental math because of it. Our only issue was this game should be played by at least 3 players and we only had two. We always turned the cards face down when trading to mimic the fun of not knowing what you are picking but its more fun when you actually have a choice between multiple piles.

As both a teacher and a parent I have found the Melon Rind games to be an excellent source of entertainment. We live in a time where technology does everything for us ...unfortunately that can make our brains very lazy. Games like Check the Oven (and the other Melon Rind games) provide a fun way for children to stimulate their minds and build their mathematical skills. I strongly recommend the game as a great classroom tool for teachers and a fun family game for parents with young children.

I love playing this game with my children aged 9, 8, and 5. It is wonderful for working on math skills and having fun at the same time.

So far, all of the Melon Rind games share a common trait hard to find in math facts games: they are actually fun! My husband and I would even pull this out to play with friends after the kids go to bed. Great for sneakily teaching addition facts and not boring the socks off parents or older siblings; also reinforces skip-counting/the concept of multiplication, which was an unexpected surprise. For players less fluent in math facts, we made a “cheat card” listing the possible combinations, which keeps the game moving.

Great math game. Whole family loves it.
