desertcart.com: Fundamentals of Physics Extended: 9780470469088: Halliday, David, Resnick, Robert, Walker, Jearl: Books Review: Excellent - I ordered this book (the complete extended edition) last week, and although it's too early to give a full review, I have to say that I love it so far. The book explains things clearly (you'll need to know calculus), and the figures help understand a concept being described. The problems at the end of the chapters get challenging, so it would be nice to have the solutions manual in case you get stuck on something. I'll update this review if my experiences with this book change my opinion on it, but like I said, I really love it as of now. Edit: So after using this book for nearly two semesters, I still stand by what I said before. Everything is explained so clearly, and the order that things are presented makes so much sense. It contains just the right amount of explanations, and knows how to introduce a topic. The figures work really well in helping you understand the topic. Sometimes you might need to reread a section to fully understand it. For example, I had a bit of trouble understanding Gauss' law, but after reading it an extra two or three times, I fully understood it. The book quality is excellent as well. Advice: Don't just read the chapters, go slow and try to understand everything. 100% recommended. Review: eBook version - There are plenty reviews about the content of the book. This is about the eBook alternative. First I bought a printed copy of book along with other college books, Soon It became a heavy backpack to carry around, with the eBook version I carry most of my books in my tablet, I hope soon all publishers will make a digital format available on all college books. Checking the answers on the back of the book is a click away with book marks or text highlight. And having the option to blow the section of a page screen wide is an eye saver, text and graphics can be seen at greater detail if necessary. Going digital is the best decision I made. If you have and iPad 1,2,3 or android tablet, go for it. You don't need a super fast tablet to read ebooks, you just need the kindle app installed in your tablet. There are too many benefits to ignore ebooks. Just a note any tablet with screen greater than 8" is best suited. That does not mean that a tablet with 7" screen will not work, you will have to adjust the view more often to fit what you want to see in that window size.

Worth the money
Taught me everything, easy to understand, shows steps upon how to do problems in the book, builds up from easiest to do to really hard complex problems instead of giving you hard problems in the beginning.

Looseleaf!!!
When I clicked on the review, it said looseleaf in parentheses underneath, but I do not remember seeing that when I ordered it otherwise I probably wouldn't have. I was irritated when i received it, but didn't have time to send it back and get the hardcover, so that is on me. Next time I won't wait so long to get my books. The description just said softcover, so I thought that what it was. So, yes it was cheaper, and the one nice thing is that I don't have to lug this huge book around, but it is annoying trying to make sure the pages stay in the right order, plus I had to go buy a huge binder to put it in and I'm always worried that the holes are going to tear. Honestly I would say if you can afford the hardcover - or if they make a TRUE softcover - get that instead. You'll be much happier.

Real Physics
I'm an engineering student and we've been using this book for the physics courses. I have to say it is an excellent book. The author makes things more understandable than in most other books I have used, and uses real world examples. I have had a professor from Harvard and another from Yale who both used this book and had great opinions of it. I'm not quite sure why the reviews are so poor for this book when I've seen other badly written books receive great ratings. According to tenured physicists, this is the book to start with.

Excellent Book
I took Physics 1 and 2 at different schools so I used different books. I have got to say that I think this much is by far the winner of the two. This book is far more fundamentally written. It focuses on teaching the fundamentals first. The other book that I used seemed to have more examples than an explanation of the material. It was much easier to learn from this book than the other. I would recommend this book to anyone.

It explains elemetary concepts well but when things get hard, you might need other resources
All of the mechanics stuff was pretty well explained and I passed my physics class with a B+. But when it was time to study electricity and magnetism, the explanations were not very good. I would still recommend this though to someone without a lot of physics knowledge.

A really clear book which fits into the Open University second level course (S207). It has good indexing so topics can be found easily. It is concisely written so it is best used as part of a course but clarifies some of the wordy explanations found in other books. The online help as part of the Extended edition does not seem to be available for second hand books but it is still an excellent stand alone text book for readers with some prior knowledge.
