It has a metal clip with a spring latch on one end that is not removable and a plastic detachable end with a metal loop key ring on the other end. What ever you can get on the key ring will probably hold bc the device is solid. The black plastic part that holds the reel is about 2.5 in squared. It has a locking mechanism so the cord won't retract if you don't want it to. The cord itself is about the thickness of a thin shoelace. The retraction force is very strong and consistent and I have not had any flaws with it so far (Esp. Compared to the cheap ones you get at the hardware store). The only thing I don't like about it is the thing is 6 inches from end to end and the metal clip on one end is permanently attached.
