Could this be mounted between a bed's headboard and mattress,or headboard and wall for vertical draw? Looking to tuck this under the throw pillows.

Vertical or horizontal draw between wall and headboard is fine. Be sure to anchor securely. You will need to hold the safe door open with one hand and remove the weapon with the other. There is no piston to hold the door open for a vertical draw.

does the lid have to open all the way or can it go to about a 90 degree angle to the top of the safe?

The max the lid opens up is just past 90 degree to the top of the safe. At 90 degree I easily retrieve my pistol since the holster slides out.

I bought the magazine compartment separately. It does attach to the safe and is secured by the same door that secures the safe. It works well.
