They are plastic frames bolted on to either side, and move up and down with the chair height. They cannot be adjusted independently, if they can I cannot find this 'button' anywhere. **Q: Where can I buy a spare base? Mine seems to have snapped** A: I sent mine back because of snapped metal braces. A lot of faults with this chair and a lot of dissatisfied customers.
