Rhinomed Mute Nasal Dilators for Sleep, Snoring Solution, Starter, 3 Sizes

First, about me and my particular need….and nose! I have a substantial but not huge nose and as I get older I note that my right nostril tends to collapse with hard breaths in. I also tend to be a bit “snotty”…hey, a bit personal but let’s get real here…we are talking about stuffing things up our noses. It began when my wife tried the external springy sticky strips that go over the bridge of the nose and pulls the nostrils open from the outside. She has a deviated septum and thus one dud nostril like me. We both snore some, but it’s not a big problem for us. For her it was to breathe better and get a good night’s sleep. It works for her and she bugged me to try one. OMG! That first rush of cool air up my nostril was almost intoxicating and leads me to think that perhaps I have been suffering from oxygen deprivation for most of my life. Running or even brisk walking has always had me breathing through my mouth. I soon found that the sticky spring strips were not “IT” for me. I have oily Mediterranean type skin and they just don’t stay stuck for more than a few hours. I still use them for sleep at night, because they allow me to effectively blow my nose without removal. It is a hassle, though, to scrub my nose without alcohol on a gauze pad before applying them. By morning they are half unstuck and look awful. No way I’m going out and about like that! My quest then became to find something that would augment my oxygen supply during the day without folks looking at me funny. I tried several internal clip types from Amazon. The typical idea is that you have a “U”shaped plastic clip with some variation on a paddle shape on the two ends of the “U” shape. The paddles go up your nose, and the clip wants to spring open and it pushes your nostrils wider from the inside. The wearer is (unfortunately) left with the bottom of the “U” shape connecting the two nostrils and looking like a little nose ring! One of my priorities here was to find one that minimized that aspect. I eventually tried a design that had not just paddles, but rings on the ends. These rings even have tiny ratchet “buckles” on them which allows diameter adjustment for each nostril. At first blush that arrangement seemed like a lot of “stuff” to shove up my nose, To my surprise it worked better and is more comfortable to wear than any of the “paddle” types. I did some research to find out if these things would work for wear during the day. Turns out MUTE makes a model for athletes who must breathe “explosively”. It’s called the “TURBINE” model. Sounded manly, and as a 77 year old who walks the dog morning and night, clearly that was the one for me! But NOOOOOO! Turned out that the Turbine model is very hard and stiff plastic and has little barbs on it to help keep in your nose. I found it very uncomfortable…and for some reason it is school bus yellow! So much for unobtrusive! The adjustable buckle ring design, however works really well for me and allows me to increase the diameter of the ring for extra air flow in that left nostril. Facing the fact that I am not an “explosively breathing athlete” I backed down to the MUTE base model. YESSS! Perfect. It is made from softer almost clear plastic, has no painful barbs and reduces the “nose ring effect” to a minimum. I can live with this, and I no longer have to breathe through my mouth when I walk the dog. One more pleasant surprise. The MUTE clips are advertised as being good for 10 uses. Not so for me, my first one is almost a month old, used daily and still working like new. And just one more maybe TMI thing. As mentioned I can be a bit snotty. At times I just have to blow my nose. I have learned to find a discrete spot, pull the MUTE out, blow, and pop the MUTE back in quite handily. Mute comes in 3 sizes. You need to buy the trial pack of one each to see what your needs will be. Hope this was helpful. Good luck!

Follow up on my previous review. After ordering the trial pack and trying the small out which worked very well, I order 2 boxes of small. When I opened the first box the small size was NOT what I tried in the first box (which I still have and the med and large are both there). This new smaller version works for a small child. They won’t stay in your nose a night and cover about 1/2 your nostril. No problem I will return the box I have unopened and get the medium. WRONG. I cannot return this item! So now I have wasted $40plus dollars on a child size nasal dial at or that I cannot use. BEWARE. It was a bait and switch for me and a Waste of money. Amazon should let the buyer know when an unopened box of worthless product cannot be returned! I was told my very loud snoring was out of control. I put a snore app on my phone and found I was breathing out of my mouth. My nasal passages were swollen and nearly closed due to a deviated septum. So decided to give this a try. I CANNOT BELIEVE the difference in air flow!!! I bought the trial and started with the small. It was tight and rigid. My nose immediately started to bleed. After running hot water over the device to make it soft I was able to get it in my nose without feeling scratched up. I find the routine of warm water before inserting is much more comfortable. No bleeding or scratching. In the morning after I remove it I take a qtip with a bit of Vaseline on it and run it around my nostrils. My app had me Azeri snoring for 3 nights and now light snoring as the device does swish when I lay on my side. But MUCH better than I was before Also I wake up so refreshed! I used to literally feel like I had a hang over and was using an oxygen can to feel more awake in the mornings. I will definitely keep using this product!

Summary: The Rhinomed Nasal Dilator with it's adjustable ring is an interesting concept. However, I couldn't get enough air, so I switched to the SleepRight Intra-Nasal Breathe Aid which worked much better for me. The Rhinomed has a single ring that is adjustable to a limited extent. However, I have found that devices that have a full ring block a lot of air which makes me feel like I'm struggling to breathe as I go to sleep and whenever I wake up. I could not get the Medium to expand enough to compensate for the ring going around the bottom, so I tried the Large. However, the Large also has a larger nose loop that holds the device in-place that was much too big for me (and was not adjustable) so the device kept falling out. note -- collapsing nostrils is one of several possible causes of snoring and possibly sleep apnea. You can tell if you need a nasal dilator by relaxing your facial muscles (including the nose) and breathing in quickly. If the walls of your nose collapse then this could be obstructing your breathing at night when you are sleeping, leading to snoring and possibly sleep apnea. I prefer the design of the SleepRight because it's butterfly semi-cirle spring tension design provides the maximum unobstructed airflow of all of the re-usable dilators, Here's a summary of my problems with two other types I've tried: - Nasal Strips: these are expensive, and the adhesive hurts my nose when I remove it. I also have to a double them up (or use an extra-strength version) to really get sufficient tension to hold my nose open. - Gideon Anti-Snoring Nose Vents: These have several rings that form a basket that goes into the nose. It's a great idea, but as with the Rhinomed these rings block a substantial amount of air. The only one that gave me sufficient air was the Extra-Large, but this ended up going into my nose much too far and irritating it. I cut it shorter -- but it remained uncomfortable

For as long as I remember I was a mouth breather. Either that, or I was blowing my nose all the time. Or doing some humidifier or bootleg saline-neti pot situation. When it was dust, hay fever, or just the winter cold, my nose was always feeling clogged. I assume I have a deviated septum or something. The straw that broke the camel's back was one day going to the eye doctor and being told I had to have bilateral retinal detachment surgery. Yes, both of my eyes were in danger of going blind. This might be dramatic, but I feel like blowing my nose constantly all these years weakened my eye tissues and created several holes back there. (Anatomy lesson: The face has holes all over the inside between the mouth, ears, nose, and eyes. All that clogged air has to go somewhere right? Graphic I know.) Thankfully, the surgery was a success, but I knew I couldn't live like this anymore. Poor sleep, trouble getting air, and constantly making ugly breathing noises. So I looked into nose strips. I did those for a few months on and off, but they were irritating my skin, and sometimes I didn't get enough "lift" for my nostrils to open up all the way. Sometimes I would have to double up on extra strength versions. It got expensive too. Then I thought, I can't do this anymore either. My skin around my nose was dry and red, and the results weren't consistent. Sometimes the strip would fall off and sometimes it didn't help at all. So, back to Amazon search I go. I bought this 6 times from Amazon so far, so that should tell you something. This is the closest thing to being the end-all be all fix. Let me give you a few tips: 1) Read the instructions or you'll put it in backwards like I did. 2) Buy the trial pack and see what size you are. Then buy the size that fits best. 3) Don't be like me and increase the size of the ring when you feel extra congested. It's going to be tempting to think bigger hole=more air. But you want it to actually fit far enough in the BACK of your nose. If you adjust the hole to a size thats too large, you'll expand your nostrils, but the back of your nasal passage will still collapse and you'll still get that clogged feeling. It's much better to keep the rings small enough to fit all the way back there. 4) Don't be too forceful all the way back there or your nose will bleed like mine. 5) WASH THEM AND GET A SMALL BEDSIDE CONTAINER TO STORE THEM. Caring for these reminds me of my contact lenses, but in the opposite times of day. You want to clean them when you wake up and store them for the next night. Don't be lazy like me just taking them out and setting them aside somewhere on your bed to come back to later. It's gross and you'll end up losing them easily like I do. I'm telling you, it's tempting to just set them aside somewhere, but you really want to keep track of these. A few more things: It's a strange feeling at first, but the comfort of being able to breathe through your nose is so addicting. You'll find the tradeoff very satisfying. And when I mean it's addicting, it will be very addicting. Some days I wear these for hours and hours. I'm trying to work up the courage to wear this in public without a face mask. You'll end up buying these again one way or another. On nights where I forget to put these in, my body now still tries to breathe through my nose and I regret it. Finally, the major downside is the cost verses performance. IS it the best thing? Yes. Is the cost fair for 3? . 20 dollars an order adds up, but again... do you put a price on improved sleep? But the silicone-like material loses its rigidity after a day or two once it's "broken in." So the device itself gets more loose and bendy; which is not the optimal thing for something you want to stay in place. But so far, I'll continue to buy this. This combined with Alkalol Nasal Wash have had me these best nights sleep I've had in years. I often stop and ask myself, is this how "normal" people breathe??

I have tried all of them. Most of the internal nasal dilators collapse under the weight of my nasal walls, the material is so flimsy. Some pop out in the middle of the night or even shortly after insertion. I have very small nasal passages and suffer environmental allergies. I am extremely allergic to dust but am a lazy housekeeper, too lazy to vacuum all the time. I always had to sleep on 2 or 3 pillows which I swear over the years gave me arthritis in the neck. I have been dissapointed in most of the dilators primarily because the manufacturers are so afraid to make them out of a firm material. In my opinion I would rather breathe than worry about a little discomfort. But thats just me. I loved a discontinued product called the "nosewide" It was 2 round LARGE tubes to insert in each nostril joined together at the bottom. It was made of a very firm and thin material, I guess like plastic but it was so thin it hardly took up any space in the nostrils. It did what its name said-nose wide. I ordered from Amazon some similar items that looked like nose wide but sure enough, they were made of a flimsy silicone material that collapsed under the weight of the nasal wall. My other and most coveted was "sullys nose spreader" which was made of surgical stainless steel wire and was absolutely everything a nasal dilator should be-lightweight, comfortable, and opens your nasal passages, from top to bottom as wide as you want. I loved it so much I sold them for the inventor Robert Sullivan, may he rest in peace. When he passed, his family did not want to continue his legacy. Very sad-he was way ahead of his time and he originally created it for his own use. He used to place straws up his nose to breathe. The humorist Dave Barry even wrote a review about it which was printed in the Washington Post and Chicago Tribune and suggested it as a great Christmas present. Here is his review, always a good laugh! You readers obsessed with this topic will appreciate it. [...] After my last "Sully's" broke over time, I was in the market for a replacement. There was a close second to "Sully's" I believe it was called "Sleep with EZEE " also a wire dilator that is shaped ina a circular zigzag shape. The inventer passed away and apparently they are not available anymore. So I have been using jumbo sized coated paperclips, bent backwards and shaped it like the "Sully's" I put one in each nostril. Yes, lots of air came in, but after I fell asleep they would work its way out and be on the bed when I worke up. But at least I could fall asleep with them in. Last week was placing an order and needed like $15 more to get free shipping, so decided to see what was new in the nasal dilator section. I ordered these in the "try out" pack. I believe they were in my mailbox the next day shipping was that fast! But that wasn't the most important part for me as I have been disappointed in almost all of the dilators I have tried. I had low expectations. As soon as I received the "Mute" sample pack I picked the Large size as I like my nostrils open WIDE as I feel like I am suffocating when I sleep. I am happy to say that it worked extremely well with minimal to no discomfort. Easy insertion and the last 4 nights I have been sleeping with it it never fell out. Now I can sleep with one pillow, instead of 2. With a little adjusting my nostrils stay wide open. The material is firm enough not o collapse under the weight of the nasal walls yet comfortable.And I just found out that the size is adjustable. With the little plastic pin built in -and it is miniscule, I can -and did make it a little wider . I am extremely happy with this product. I have just placed an order for the Rhinomed Turbine, another dilator this same manufacturer makes marketed for athletes.I want to see the difference between the 2. I believe I read that the Turbine is a little firmer than the Mute. To me that means it may last longer than the "Mute" therefore be less expensive over time. Will let you all know my findings.

I'm pretty confident these will do absolutely nothing for the vast majority of people. It DOES do an extraordinarily good job of expanding your nostrils, but only the first half an inch into your nostril, barely passed the part where they flare outward and our largest. To my knowledge basically no one ever has problems with congestion there because it's just skin and cartilage. The important part (ie. the part you want to be expanding with the product) is higher in the nose where the passage narrows, because that's where you start getting tissue that can become inflamed and restrict airflow. For the record, I initially only wore this thing to sleep for a few nights to test it. Then when I tried putting on a nasal strip at the same time I realized this thing didn't even move when the nasal strip pulled my nose open. They aren't affecting the same part of the nose, and the part of the nose that thing opens doesn't matter if the part right above it is more narrow anyway. It's a cool idea, and it doesn't seem like a crappy company or product. The box is nice, the packaging is professional, and the instructions are clear (step 1 hold in hand, step 2 place into nose), so I don't think they're trying to scam people. Unfortunately it just isn't very effective.

Update: so after using the mute nasal dilator for over almost 2 months now, I have some issues with it. You know how when you constantly rub something, it starts to form a type of callus? Well that’s happening inside my right nostril. It’s becoming so bad that now the right nostril is clogged during the day. So now I’m using two different types of dilators one for one week, the mute for the next week, then back to the other for a week, etc and so on. So nothing is perfect but I cannot use cpap any longer. It causes me less sleep and more problems than it solves. Im kind of stuck? Not sure what to do now, but just wanted to put this out there. No dilator is great at this stage. Don’t like the nasal strips because they do not stay on and don’t open my nose enough. So there’s my update! So this is an honest review. I’m not paid, I’m not getting any compensation; I’m just hoping to help someone else. I bought the trial pack for Mute and quickly figured out that the medium was for me. I wore it a while and I’ll be honest (again!) I felt like it bothered me. UNTIL I tried another brand of nasal dilator and oh my word! I wore the other brand for a week just to give it a fair shot and had blisters in my nose that scabbed over during the daytime. I went back to Mute and it was heaven compared to the other brand. Now having said that: the Mute dilator is not completely comfortable to where you don’t know it’s there BUT it does not cause bleeding or sores and weirdly enough when I went back to it? It seemed to work far better than the other brand that claimed to open passages “58% more.” So the night I went back to Mute? I slept 8 hrs 26 mins and woke up feeling great. The week prior with the other brand? I barely slept 5 without ripping the thing out and having a blocked left nasal passage for the rest of the night. So! That’s my honest review. In total I have tried 5 different nasal dilators and out of all of them? I’m sticking with the Mute medium nasal dilator. It’s a pain to put in, it’s a pain to get where your nose wants it to be, BUT it’s the only one so far that I’ve found that keeps my nasal passages open and lets me sleep without a clogged left nasal passage without pain and bleeding. I’ve had sinus surgery and it made things worse after so that’s not an option. The only thing I wish is that they made a variety of each size; such as extra small, small, larger small, small medium, medium, larger medium etc and so on. That way those clips wouldn’t be on there and it would be more comfortable. Hope this helps someone!

I'm a big guy (6'5", 300 lbs). And as I've gotten older, my nasal passages have become more restricted. As a result, my snoring has worsened. It doesn't bother me, but often my wife loses sleep because of my stentorian rumblings. So I've been looking for solutions. I've tried Sleep-Rite strips. Bust. I've tried ayurvedic topical oils (my wife swears by them, but I've never noticed a difference). Bust. Recently, I've started shifting ends of the bed with my head elevated with a wedge, depending on which side I wanted to sleep on. This helps prevent me from snoring in my wife's face, but it doesn't really address the problem. I was looking for snoring solutions on Amazon and found Rhinomed's 'Mute' anti-snoring aids. I opted for the trial pack and, after futzing around with the medium and large units, settled on the large as my go-to. I put it in, inserted all the way into my nasal passages, and slept like a baby. When I woke up the next morning, I couldn't tell if it was still in until I reached for it. There was no pain, discomfort, or soreness. After inserting it, I can feel it for a minute or two, but then it warms up to my body temperature and I can't feel it at all. A couple of times over the past few days, I've woken up and had to reach up to my nose to verify that it was still there (it was). So every morning, I ask the jury how my snoring was. She's told me repeatedly that it's a lot better. Where before I sounded like a 747 taxiing down the runway, now I sound like a polite teakettle that's not sure whether it wants to sound off or not. In my book, that's a W. I'll purchase a package of the large 'Mutes' and use them for a while. Then I may switch off to a different, but similar, solution to see if it makes any significant difference. (Note that I have nothing against the Rhinomed Mute at all, but I'm just looking to do some testing to find the one best solution for me and my situation.) Overall, if you snore, definitely give these a try. Be aware that each size - small, medium, and large - has a range of adjustments, so you can adjust it to your exact preferences (even in the case of one nasal passage being larger than the other, which isn't uncommon...). I've also discovered that Rhinomed makes a 'Turbine' model that's used to open your airways when exercising. The Turbine model looks identical to the Mute model, except for the Turbine being yellow where the Mute is clear. Ish. I may try wearing the Mute to the gym to see if it helps with my breathing while working out. If not, I can always remove it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Après avoir utilisé tous les modèles possibles actuellement sur le marché, je me suis arrêtée définitivement sur celui-ci pour son efficacité. La texture est souple et le bienfait immédiat pour respirer plus largement. La gêne ressentie au début s'estompe rapidement. Malheureusement, je ne le garde pas toujours toute la nuit, mais je ne sais pas s'il tombe tout seul ou si c'est moi qui l'enlève pendant la nuit dans mon sommeil. Je recommande cependant ce produit sans aucune hésitation.

Semplicemente spettacolare. Io lo uso per una migliore respirazione notturna a causa del setto nasale stretto. Ne ho provati svariati e questo funziona veramente bene. Io sono anni che ne uso quindi l'ho travato comodo fin da subito, altri ci si dovranno abituare, ma è normale. Non si muove minimamente durante la notte, nemmeno sbadigliando. Estremamente soddisfatto.

Muy buen producto. Yo no ronco (o eso creo) pero durante la noche me cuesta trabajo respirar por algún tipo de alergia, lo cual me hace despertarme de noche y no descansar al 100%. Con este producto he podido dormir muy bien sin interrupciones. Lo único es que no estoy seguro de que dure 10 noches cada uno... anoche ya se me desprendio. Aun asi, vale la pena.

I bought almost all the nasal dilation products out there, this by far is the best one and the most well made for daily use. I tried the magnets and the straps and other products that go inside the nose, but nothing did the job like this one.
