Award-winning author Sid Fleischman blends the broadly comic with the deeply compassionate in this memorable novel, winner of the Newbery Medal. A Prince and a Pauper . . . Prince Brat and his whipping boy inadvertently trade places after becoming involved with dangerous outlaws. The two boys have nothing in common and even less reason to like each other. But when they find themselves taken hostage after running away, they are left with no choice but to trust each other. "A rollicking tale of adventure and mistaken identity . . . . Robust scenes and characters are vividly evoked."— Kirkus Reviews This briskly told tale of high adventure, taut with suspense and rich with colorful characters, was named an ALA Notable Book. Sid Fleischman's celebrated novel features brief, action-packed chapters and includes black-and-white illustrations by Caldecott Honor artist Peter Sís. "An 18th century tale about the escapades of a resourceful orphan and a spoiled young prince. . . . Full of adventure, suspense, humor, and lively characters."— The New York Times Review: A Prince and Pauper type story - This is a great book for middle schoolers. Interesting story of an age gone by. Review: A true classic - Read this for the first time since fourth grade! I always remembered my teacher reading this aloud to my class, so I decides to do the same for my own kids. It still holds up after 20 plus years! Great story about friendship, adversity, overcoming hardship, and empathy. This is great for younger readers, 8-10 years old, but adults will enjoy sharing this with their kids or students. My only complaint is that the illustrations aren't kid friendly. Very much just scratches, no color and they don't match the story.

Read for 9yo book club
A rollicking adventure - the boys and I loved it. Super short, fast paced, and with tons of voice. The character development along the way was awesome, and it definitely had some laughs too. Highly recommend!

The whipping daughter should be next
My daughter is bad. She needs a whipping girl. If I were a king, she'd have one. She disagrees with my assertion.

Great short story
Never read this as a kid, read it with my daughter this year and really enjoyed the story. Great writing, you really dislike the prince lol, and it's a great historical and fun story with giving kids the questions to answer of who would they be and what would they choose to do in each scenario

Great story
This was my 9yr Olds mandatory summer reading. She really enjoyed reading it and loved telling me all it. Definitely a must read for older elementary students.

Though the pages don't open very well the story is very good.
This book was written in a way that our children could enjoy the story and learn a little history at the same time. As a family we enjoyed the read.
