I thought the entire thing was lithium battery-powered. Only the remote has the lithium battery (included). You have to put in four (4) AA batteries per ball. I bought 2 sets of 4's so that was 32 batteries! Even on timer mode, they'll need to be replaced in a couple of weeks. It was convenient to have a remote control and a timer so the lights came on every night at the same time. My kids (10 and 7) loved playing with all the settings. Batteries lasted almost the whole season. Remote did not work through windows, so we had to open the door or slide the window open to adjust settings. Pretty modern aesthetic firework burst light. They did provide one remote per light. Not necessarily needed, but the kids did lose one remote. Very happy with this purchase.
