In the photos the shapes of the puzzle pieces don't seem to vary. Is there variation that would prevent incorrect pieces from fitting together?

While the pieces more or less look the same. I have found tht incorrect pieces will sometimes leave a weird small gap. But tht aside there isn't a variation available to prevent that

What is the exact width of these puzzles? Do they exceed 8.5"?

All of my puzzles have been 7.75x11.5. My 8.5x11 paper is too wide and not long enough. I have to use an 8.5x13 paper size.
