Great camera mount with lots of possibilities!
Prior to this, I experimented with using a plastic container and some poster putty to mount a camera on the dash of my car. While I expected a certain amount of camera shake, the results were very disappointing. Therefore, I went to Amazon in search of a proper dash mount. I purchased the Fat Gecko camera mount based on the positive reviews, and I am very pleased with the product. Well constructed from heavy duty plastic and metal parts, it also offers a great deal of flexibility in terms of camera positioning. The suction cup is extremely strong, and I actually pulled the plastic mount base off my dash trying to remove the Fat Gecko. Afterward, I considered alternate uses for this mount which might come in handy for filming in other places. By mounting your camera to a window, you can get a unique angle, especially in a small space. This would also come in handy for placing the camera somewhere you can't fit a traditional tripod. Additionally, the Fat Gecko comes with a cold shoe attachment for mounting a microphone, light, or small display monitor. In looking at the other product offerings, this is very much a modular system, with the ability to expand by purchasing additional mounts and combining them. As a film-maker, this is an especially appealing feature. Given the strength of the suction cups, I would feel comfortable mounting a camera to the outside of my car as I have seen done in Hollywood productions. I also intend to experiment with turning the camera mount into a steady cam by attaching a weighted plastic container. All things considered, I am extremely satisfied with the quality of the Fat Gecko, and I'm excited by the possibilities it offers. I highly recommend this line of camera mounts as they are well constructed, affordable, and with some imaginative thinking, offers a lot of options for filming any of a number of projects, scenes, or events. I'm including a video I shot by mounting the camera directly on the passenger-side door of my car. The music is royalty -free, and the video is entirely my own. I cruised around at speeds of 35-40 mph, but I would be comfortable mounting a small, consumer grade video camera while traveling at much higher speeds.

Hasn't failed me in 2 years. Highly recommend.
- Overview - I've been using this suction cup for a couple of years now and I highly recommended it. I originally used it with a point and shoot digital camera, and recently with a gopro (with gopro tripod adapter). I can mount it in various places for different shots without having to stick a bunch of permanent sticky gopro mounts. For what it is, it's a great product. I highly recommend it over others out there considering its build quality, function, and price. - Suction performance - I've not had a single time where it failed / fell off. I've reached speeds up to 90mph with it and it held on fine. But if you plan to go that fast make sure to setup a safety tether! The suction is definitely better than other cheap suction mounts out there, but I cannot say how it compares with the gopro suction mount, as I've not tried that one. But I suppose that's a good thing as I didn't need to. - Build quality - The quality is top notch. Very high quality, durable plastic & metal all around. You don't need to worry about cracking or breaking it at all with normal use. Just make sure to take care of the actual suction cup, as that is the most delicate part of this product (as with any other). Also, wipe clean both the surface and the suction cup before attempting to mount it with a (damp) cloth. - Extension arm - The extension is of same high quality, and works fine. But consider your application. I mount it on a sport bike with lots of vibration so the resulting video is too shaky for me. Could work great on or in a car, however.

Strong mount, with a few pitfalls
Before I continue the review, I used: Nikon D7000 35mm 1.8 2012 Subaru Impreza First of all, this mount is rock solid when mounted properly. As long as you make sure the suction cups are firmly attached (meaning, you push them down twice, then secure them with the strong plastic clips), it's not going anywhere. I began testing the mount at 20mph, 30mph, and 55-60mph (highway) with the camera attached to my hood, in the direct center. At all of these speeds, vibrations were quite obvious, but I realized this wasn't a flaw of the mount, but what it's attached to, the car! Vibrations caused by bumps, uneven road surfaces, and things like that were all too apparent as the video I took continued. At slow speeds, video was flawless. I took a video from the driver's side door, and hood (left, then center). Aside from rocks hitting the UV filter attached when the mount was close to the tire, it performed flawlessly. The suction cups are secure, they tilt, and don't worry me whatsoever. Moving on from that, I did notice one little flaw- the length of the bar you attach the camera to. For shots with focal lengths above 20 (for example, 35mm) i'd recommend getting the extension arm, which I will be soon purchasing. For taking photos of my wheel as I drive, the camera would not go far enough out for the shot to look good, and the extension arm looks as if it'll help. The construction of it is very, very solid- hardened plastic, and steel make up the product entirely, aside from the suction cups, of course. This is by far the most affordable, and surprisingly secure mount you can get as a consumer.

Fabulous Flat Fat Gecko
I own two Fat Gecko Triples and one Fat Gecko Single. One of the best features about the Fat Gecko System is that it's modular and can be built onto and adjusted to meet a variety of needs. The Fat Gecko Triple says that it's a combo of the Double and a Single, which isn't exactly true. If you buy a Single separately, it also comes with a flash bracket and a plastic extension that adds a few inches of reach to the arm. These items do not come with the Triple. However, one thing the Triple does include (that isn't included with the Single or Double) is an aluminum clamp which mounts on the extension bar of the Double. The clamp is used to combine a Single with the Double to make the Triple. Feel like I'm taking about baseball. Anyhow, if you add the cost of the Double and Single, it's close to the cost of the Triple, but I suppose the savings is that you get the clamp with the Triple, a part that costs $20 by itself. As for the build quality, I find it to be very good. The pictures and description do not give this product justice. All the knuckle joints are made of metal. The twist locks are made of metal. The twist collars are made of metal. I'm not sure about the type of metal, but it doesn't appear to be the cheap pig iron that you find in many low quality parts. The ball joint is definitely steel as are the threaded posts (that hold your expensive gear). All the plastic that is used is a higher grade plastic than what most cheap Made in China products use. It's similar (if not the same) as the plastic used in Nikon and Canon products. As for other construction, the swivel where the suction cup mounts has click stops and washers and the clamps that tighten down over the balls are grooved to ensure a tight, slip free grip. Now, for why I feel Fat Gecko exceeds other similar products. It's so ridiculously modular that you could build just about any configuration you could imagine (limited by how many sets as you want to purchase of course). When buying the Triple, you actually end up with a Double and Single. But, when I purchased another Triple, I found that I could make a Quad setup for maximum stability, and then had two Singles left over. All the parts interchange on all of the sets and Delkin also makes other products in the Fat Gecko line. I do not know about the whole line, but parts from the surface mount system can also be used with their Gator Clamp system as well. Along with the modularity comes maximum flexibility for adjustments. Many flat surface mount systems I've seen and researched would need a flat surface with all suction cup being on the same plane. Most can only mount two of three cups on something with as little curvature as a car hood. The Fat Gecko system has so many adjustment points that can be positioned in so many angles, I can't imagine many applications where a way to mount it, or the desired angle couldn't be found. I'd say the fail point on most suction cup based systems would be the suction cups. Cuts, holes or other damage to the cups basically renders the entire system useless. Most systems I've looked at do not have a fix for this. On many, the suction cups are attached to the frame. Damage one cup and you'd just have to throw everything away. Even the most expensive systems offer no way to replace a suction cup. Now, Fat Gecko doesn't market the Stealth model as a replacement suction cup, but that's what it could be. For $20, you can buy a complete suction cup replacement that is easily exchanged for a damaged one. The operation of the Fat Gecko is very simple. Just attach the suction cups fist, then adjust for angle and tighten down the clamps. Just remember to tighten all the clamps. The suction cups have a feature not found on most (even expensive sets) flat surface mount systems. A large button labeled "Press" is on top of the suction cup. Pressing the button forces air out of from under the cup. To finish securing the cup, a latch is lifted that locks it down. To remove the suction cups, just push down the latch and pull up the tabs on the sides. I've actually had the cups so secure that I've had to almost pry them off the surface. I've tested this system in several settings with different mounting configurations and can confidently say that I have no problem trusting my $4,500 rig to this product. The description says that some of the fittings are rubber to help minimize vibrations. I feel this is pretty much hype. Yes, there are runner O-rings at several connection points, but I feel their effect is negligible. However, regardless of the O-rings, this system is extremely stable (well, at least using three suction cups for mounting). One reviewer stated the Single was worthless for mounting a camera. I would not recommend mounting a DSLR on a Single, however a GoPro or anything of relative size shouldn't pose much of an issue. I use the Singles/Double for mounting lighting, mics, etc, so shake isn't an issue in those applications. I read some other reviews with complaints about mounting on various surfaces as advertised by the manufacturer. I think there's a little ambiguity in the advertising, however maybe some user error in not fully understanding the limitations of this system. For one, the manufacturer clearly states that these systems will easily mount to any smooth, flat, non-porous, surface. These surfaces include windshields, car hoods, surfboards, helmets, etc. I think some issues that people have had is that they've mounted (or tried to mount) one of these rigs onto something that they thought was smooth, flat and non-porous, that actually was not. One reviewer had mentioned mounting a camera to a surfboard, only to lose everything in the ocean. The thing is, most surfboards I've seen do not have a smooth surface. Yes, most are flat and non-porous, but most I've seen are also textured. Textured in that they have small bumps, usually designed to increase traction. However, I'm sure there are boards out there that have a smooth surface. I just find it hard to believe (given my experience) that a properly sealed suction cup on a smooth surface surfboard couldn't hold the weight of a GoPro during the first wave. Also, I'd never mount anything to a car, cycle, surfboard, etc without using a tether. The issue I have with the cycle helmet claim by the manufacturer isn't that it's not true, it just may not be possible with a variety of helmets or more probable, probably not the view/angle you were hoping for. The picture on the packaging shows a Fat Gecko Single mounted to the side of a helmet. I've owned several helmets and know that due to the nature of design, the sides are longer and flatter (well, less round) than the rest of the helmet. Having ridden cycles for years, I personally would not want even a couple ounces of uneven weight on one side of the helmet. Not only that, but who'd want the whole right (or left) side of their recording to be obscured by the helmet. The best placement is the top center or back center of the helmet. Not currently owning a helmet, I haven't been able to test the mounting ability of the suction cups, but I think there's some validity to any issues people may have had with helmets. I'd say the marketing dept at Delkin ride. Well, that's pretty much it. A great product that works fantastically for everything that I need it to do. I only gave four stars, because I think being manufactured in China, the whole Triple (which sells for $99) probably costs about $9 to produce. I guess the mark up comes from the photos of the product mounted on helmets and such. Could be priced a little more appropriately I'd say. Also, I'm no rubber specialist, but I'm not sure if the rubber used for the suction cups is of the highest quality or not. I'm on the fence about that, as I've seen the black, denser rubbers that seem to last longer, but possibly don't have the same tack and grip as the clear rubber, which seems to wear (and color) faster. And that's all I have to say about that.

Very durable
I bought this camera mount three years ago for use with my DSLR but to be honest I hardly ever used it until this year. I was always super paranoid about using it on the outside of a moving car with my DSLR, even after using it many times mounting it on the inside of a car (it never fell off or anything). Recently I mounted a GoPro onto the windshield of a Jeep and took it offroading. After 45 minutes or so of intense bumping and going over rough terrain, rocks and hills, this thing didn't budge! Make sure when you mount it the surface is clean and the suction cups aren't on top of any dirt, mud or other road junk. Also make sure it's not on top of any stickers or decals. I've found that the best way to mount it is to first loosen the knobs that control the angle for the suction cups, then once suctioned down, tighten those knobs. This thing is great and I don't regret getting one with three suction cups at all. I actually think the two suction cup model like this one gives you better flexibility and mounting options, especially when using a smaller/lighter camera (like a GoPro). After three years, this offroading test was the definitive test for me. I also left it on the windshield of the Jeep as we made our way back into town (make sure it's legal to mount a camera on the outside of a vehicle in your town/city/state). After this test I no longer have any worries of mounting this on the exterior of a moving vehicle with a small camera. Things to keep in mind: a GoPro in the waterproof case is nearly indestructible. Look up on YouTube the video of a skydiver accidentally dropping one out of a plane. It lands in a pig pen on a farm and is totally still functional (a pig actually tries to eat it - unsuccessfully, I might add). So even in a worst case scenario, the mount falls off the vehicle in some way, your GoPro will likely be fine. Even though I bought this originally to use with my DSLR I still have some reservations about mounting a DSLR on the exterior of a moving vehicle, simply due to the added weight. To be honest, even though this mount can support a DSLR, I think the use of an action cam like a GoPro is better anyway. I believe this simply because with a DSLR recording video you'll have no way of manually adjusting your camera settings; something you'll often need to do as the setting and lighting changes. With something like a GoPro the auto settings will adjust things accordingly (not perfectly, and I'm definitely a fan of shooting in all manual mode normally, but it's good enough). Of course this will depend on your specific needs, and I'm sure using one with a DSLR will probably turn out just fine. I would certainly buy this product again. And if I get additional GoPros then I definitely will so I can mount cameras all over the interior and exterior of a moving vehicle, instead of having to shoot things multiple times for each mounting position.

What a great little gadget!
I started riding motorcycles about a year ago. And because I was travelling to all kinds of places I didn't before, I wanted to capture the memories on video. So I had 3 options: put a camera in my helmet, get a Go Pro, or get something to attach my camera to the bike. I tried putting the camera in the helmet. The footage was great and I could talk into the camera mic, but I didn't like how the camera blocked some of my vision. Next was the Go Pro. Great little device. I just didn't want to spend $150 on a camera when I already had a perfectly good one. So, I looked into camera mounts and found the Fat Gecko Mini. I've had the mount for about six months. I've ridden about 6,000 miles with the mount on the bike (ZX-6R). Some rides lasted 8+ hours. I've taken it to the track 3 times. And I have done 145 mph with the camera mounted. Not once has the mount fell off, felt loose, or became unstable. It is an amazing little thing. For most of my rides, I placed the mount on my tank behind the windscreen. I really wanted to place it on the front of the bike or the side. But honestly, I thought that it would get pulled off by the wind. About 2 weeks ago, I find got the courage to place it on the front of the bike, with no wind protection. It performed flawlessly! The ride lasted for 7 hours. I didn't take it off the entire time. I can't tell you how nervous I was for the first hour of the ride. After that, I didn't even think about it. My only negative comment about the mount is the extension. I can not use it on the motorcycle. There is just too much vibration from the road. If it were on a non-moving surface or inside of a vehicle, I have no doubt that there would be very little vibration in the camera footage. Any hand-held camera which can attach to a tripod (most cameras) can be mounted on the Fat Gecko Mini. I wouldn't put a camcorder or camera over 2 pounds on it when mounting on the outside of a vehicle. That's just asking for trouble. But everything else, go for it! So save some money and get one. You won't be disappointed.

Awesome In-Car Camera Mount
The Delkin Fat Gecko is a great product and was just what I was looking for. I use it to mount my camcorder on my windshield. It is EXTREMELY sturdy and has a huge amount of suction. The only part of the Fat Gecko that moves is where the suction cup meets the actual unit itself, but it is very, very minor movement. It's more of a flexing motion as opposed to a loose part. Overall, it provides very sturdy video. PROS +Very well built, quality materials, very thick and strong plastic. +Holds camera still (it does its job). +Adjustment bolts are heavy duty, allowing for maximum tightening without worrying about cracking the plastic. +Holds a ton of weight, up to 4 pounds. +Price is reasonable. +Comes with a sturdy extension arm (about 3" more) and even a hex wrench for attaching it. CONS -A small amount of flex (and I mean SMALL) where the suction cup meets the actual unit. Only noticeable in the worst conditions: traveling fast on very rough roads, with a heavy camera and the extension arm installed. Completely expected; it still exceeds my expectations. -There is no easy way to quickly detach the camera, it is screwed on tight (i.e. there is no "quick release" as you'd find on a tripod). UPDATE: FLEXING FIX -The flexing of the unit is only noticeable with the extension installed. BUT, my camera will not fit without the extension... or so I thought. It turns out, if you mount the camera upside down on your windshield so the windshield angles AWAY from the camera instead of towards the camera, you can mount it without the extension, and therefore it is significantly sturdier. When editing the video (in iMovie '09), it is extremely easy to rotate the video 180deg into the upright position. And there you have it.

Great solution for small cameras (get to know it!)
Put my canon 80D DSLR on this mount. If I mount it to the exterior of my car, the vibrations ruin the footage, for almost anything smooth I would want to do and it looses grip when driving around town for maybe 5 minutes. Hasn't fallen with my camera yet but a suction cup has definitely lost contact. When you buy this, take a day or two to get to know it. You will start to understand what ways of mounting it will and wont work. It would actually be a great way to mount a camera, inside a car. If you want something to drive around town with and do anything crazy above 25 mph with, I wouldn't trust this with a camera setup that weighs more than 4 pounds. I would feel pretty confident about putting a GH4 with a light lens on this mount for an exterior shot on a car. Maybe even an A7s but My Canon with it's heavy glass attached is too much. You put this thing on your car, you can move the whole chassis just by pulling one the Gecko. Really good grip. Just too small for heavy stuff. I wish this was just a little bigger, it's very difficult to position it in a way that the camera will stay in position. You could vlog with it, maybe do some Documentary work if you don't mind fixing it every so often.

Metal where it matters
I was really happy with the build quality of this item. The base plates/(suction mounts themselves) are plastic as per the GoPro item. But all of the framework to support the camera are metal, after connecting it together I have great confidence it will never give me problems

Can't hold it's stated weight
I was aiming to use this to hold my Sony A7C + lens that is less then the stated weight this should be able to handle. The suction cups has held in place and really grip on to glass or any other surfaces. The problem with holding the weight is in the ball joints. They are made of decent quality plastic, but tightening them to the max, I still can move them. This means that whatever way you want to set this up, it won't hold your camera in the direction you set it up in.
