4 years and still going strong
I had this vacuum for 4 years now and I love it. I've been living in a camper for the last 4 years, so it's worked perfect for me. It doesn't take up a lot of room and stores nicely in my pantry so that was a big win. I don't have a huge area to vacuum so the battery life isn't a big issue. I have the charger mounted on the wall and hang it up after each use so I never have a dead battery. But what I love the most is if I needed more battery, all I have to do is put a freshly charged one on it. That was the main reason I purchased this vacuum, my previous stick vacuum was always dying before I would get done (back when I had a much larger home) and I hate waiting on it to charge. I don't have carpet but I do have 4 rugs. If I've just emptied the canister and cleaned the filter it will "eat" my rugs even on low because the suction is strong. You have to be careful around the corners of the rugs, but it does vacuum them very well. I find the suction to be phenomenal especially right after cleaning the filter. I ordered a pack of replacement filters a couple of years ago and I still have some new ones. When one gets really dirty or starts smelling like a dog I wash it in Lysol water and pop in a clean one and let the wet one dry out really well. The whole vacuum is very easy to clean which I appreciate. Probably my only complaint about this vacuum is when you take it apart to use as a handheld vacuum the attachment isn't long enough to get into some of my nooks and crannies, so for that I just use a shop vac. I havent had any issues at all with this vacuum and I use it at least once daily to vacuum all my floors and rugs. I have one large dog and 2 cats who are in and out all day, plus a teenage son, so there is plenty to vacuum every evening. When this vacuum eventually gives up the ghost I'll probably replace it with a HEPA vacuum because I just learned my dog has a dust mite allergy, but if not for that I'd be getting another one of these!

Excellent Performance from a Cordless Vac
My wife and I have a real problem with the current generation of vacuums. While bagless vacuums have become the "thing" we have always preferred those that required bags. It has just seemed for years now that the performance of bagless vacs just could not match traditional models. But the traditional models are just about extinct. We went through several full sized bagless vacs before we found one that could actually handle the hair from our Golden Retriever and Sheltie (the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Lift Off Bagless Upright Vacuum, which I've also reviewed). But I wanted to add a cordless stick vac to our arsenal that I could use in places such as the workshop in our old barn where electric supply is hard to come by. Persuaded by some good reviews and the fact that it takes the same battery as other B&D tools I own I decided to try this one. It turns out to be great. Great run time, plenty of power and thoroughly satisfying performance. I love that if I do need to use it beyond the capacity of its battery I can just swap it out for the battery from my B&D drill and keep on going. Yes, it is frustrating that the dust canister only holds 750 ml - but consider that this is almost twice as much volume as a Dyson that will set you back three times the price - or more! Contrary to the reports of several reviewers I have not had a single problem with the dust canister falling off or getting knocked off. And it's very easy to empty and clean. When the filter gets too dusty I just take the top of the canister out to the front porch, bang it on the steps a few times and a vast majority of the dust trapped in the filter falls right out. I was also surprised that it handles pet hair at least as well as the Bissell I mentioned earlier. And the design of the brush roller makes it a piece of cake to clear anything that gets wound around the roller. As a matter of fact, the entire thing is incredibly easy to clean and maintain. One day early on I was vacuuming away on the carpet and not yet used to the limited capacity of the dust canister. After a while it seemed like the vac was humming merrily along but wasn't picking things up very well. I stopped to investigate and discovered that not only had the canister filled up, but it kept on sucking away, filling the entire shaft clear down the the intake port...and still churning its little heart out trying to pick up more. Worried that I'd have to spend the next hour disassembling everything to get up and running again, I soon found that the process was unbelievably easy - no tools necessary other than a stick to push the accumulation out of the shaft once I disconnected it - and I was back up and running in minutes. Outstanding! Once upon a time B&D made some reasonably decent tools. Then - for years - the quality of their products (in my opinion) got progressively worse and worse. But in the last several years I believe they have come out with a general line of tools that now rival the best names out there. This stick vac continues that revival and I believe this was an excellent purchase - and on the first try, no less!

after 4 years of ownership, here's what I think
I'm writing this on Black Friday having just decided to pass on buying this again just now; hoping to get another year or more out of the one I've had for over 4 years now. Here's what I don't like so much: 1. The roller is mediocre and roller maintenance is not simple. It seizes often, with hair getting wrapped in the end nubs. When it does, you must take apart the one end of the roller and give it a cleaning. Sometimes this involves hitting the end with a plastic mallet to get it off. I also give it a little spray of silicon lube (the garage door type) to keep it free moving. I thought I'd replace the roller with a 3rd party, but the 3rd party roller was equally mediocre. So if it seizes and I don't have time to do maintenance right then, I swap in the 3rd party roller and finish up. 2. Battery life was good initially, but after 4 years of weekly use, keeping it plugged in when not in use, the battery only lasts about 10 minutes. I just bought another B&D 20V battery, so expect that will solve the problem. 3. Putting the canister back on after emptying is somewhat difficult. Aside from lining up the holes and tabs correctly, it takes some force. I've learned "the touch" that slaps it back into place nicely. What I do like: 1. It balances and stays upright on its own. I store it freestanding in an area that sees moderate traffic and it takes a direct hit to knock it over. Much more stable than you'd think looking at it. 2. The filter is easy to clean and replace 3. Suction is decent for a battery powered vacuum. It's not gonna get the ground in stuff, but picks up nearly everything that's loose and visible. For the price, I'm satisfied, would and probably will buy again. For a person who's older or a bit more feeble, I could see emptying the canister being a challenge, and removing the roller requires some finger strength.

I researched cordless vacs on Consumer Reports and while none were actually recommended, this one got a very good rating when compared to the higher priced Dyson and Shark models. When it came in, I was extremely pleased by the ease of assembly. Everything snaps together securely and comes apart just as easily to use the other attachments. The dirt cup was what really impressed me. It's so easy to remove, take apart and reassemble. When disassembled, there a dial that you can turn to remove excess dust from the filter. Said filter can also be washed and reused after being left to dry. Replacements are available if required. I primarily use this on a bare floor which was why I decided on a cordless model in the first place. I see many people complaining that these vacuums, in general, will not clean their deep carpets. Well, that's not what they were designed for. Do your research and establish your needs before buying. This unit, on high suction, stuck itself to the bare floor. Plenty of suction on low power to pick up dust and debris. I tried the beater bar and found it wasn't really necessary on bare floors. When I did try it, I found I had to go slowly or it would kick some dirt forward. I have a small, ridged area carpet which I cleaned using the beater bar and high suction setting. It was in the basement and covered with sawdust. Again, I was very impressed. It cleaned it very well. The only negative, according to Consumer Reports, was in the edge cleaning. Well I decided to test that before I wrote this and I had no issues picking up dirt when I ran the unit parallel to the wall. I just looked up replacement batteries. The Black and Decker brand, at the time of writing, is about 80 dollars. There are aftermarket ones for about half that price although there might be differences in durability. I probably won't have the opportunity to see how long the battery lasts before needing a recharge as the area I clean doesn't take that long. I thing it's advertised as 20 minutes. I turn it on and off as required when I use it. I didn't install the wall mount but I find that it stands on it's own very well and with the handle locked in the upright position, it has no tendency to want to fall over on it's own. I have no hesitation recommending this particular unit. I did, however, buy the insurance from Assurion, because....well, you never know. It was reasonable and about 35 dollars for 3 years after the manufacturer warranty expires. Happy cleaning!!

Amei!

Just received this today and have started vacuuming! I have another B&D product with same batteries so am able to charge multiple batteries to have at the ready - which is a huge bonus. I highly suggest having at least 2 batteries. I have found the highest speed to be best, so far, as I have lots of dirt and dog/cat hair. You have to change the canister frequently due to pet hair, but I'm impressed so far that the vacuum is actually picking it up off my laminate floors and not blowing it around. Also, it is pulling hair off the carpet quite nicely. Wish it was lighter as it is a bit top-heavy. Easy to assemble, and easy to change from stick vacuum to hand-held. Like most rechargeables, it does lose power as the battery runs down. I have a two-floor home so will need at least 3 batteries to do the job well. Battery does not come fully charged. High speed also has lights which is a nice feature especially with dark floors. Hoping it will last as it's so much easier than a corded upright vacuum. Not sure how it would fare against a Dyson, but so far I'm quite happy with what it does for the price.
