If you’re looking for a well-based starting point, delivered with enough energy to actually get you moving, this is a great addition to your shelf.

I enjoyed this book and managed to read it completely within a short time. As I have a tendency to buy books and read them partially, this was new. Like I said in the title, take notes and refine them to your own circumstances. Much of what he said I already know but don’t always put into practice. I am now refining my notes and making them work for me.

I found Michael through his podcast and thought I'd pick up his book. It's a quick read. Each chapter is just a few pages. He covers the basics for getting your independent consulting business up and running.

I’m of two minds about this. On one hand, I heavily underlined and dog-eared this book. On the other hand, it’s essentially a long form brochure for the author’s business, which is essentially a consultant for consultants. The first thing to understand is that the point of the book is to get you on the author’s email list, then eventually become a client of his. There’s not necessarily anything wrong with that, and though he doesn’t explicitly state it, he’s not trying to hide that fact either. He even suggests giving away a lot of information as a sales tactic. All that being said, this book is absolutely filled with useful information for a person like me. I’m a long time corporate hack, who dreams of a second career as an independent consultant. I found dozens of useful pieces of practical advice and will surely refer back if I ultimately decide this path suits me. Overall, it’s a mixed bag. The writing is pretty flat and reads like a standard blog post. That’s not a horrible thing, seeing as the chapters are very short and the entire text is presented as a condensed, almost bullet pointed guide. I could have done without some of the very basic and obvious stuff like “don’t waste too much time on Twitter” lines as part of how to be productive. But this stuff was easy enough to fly by. As I said, this book seeks to make you a client by giving you a lot of decent information.

For someone starting out in consulting - or for an experienced consultant who’s stuck and not making the progress they’d like - this is a very practical and effective guide. It covers all the aspects you need to be a success in consulting, and answers the tricky questions you’ll find yourself asking in just the right depth. The chapters on pricing are particularly useful. If you’re a new consultant or looking for a strong primer on what it takes to succeed in consulting - start here.

This book covers basicss of consulting, it might be a good choice for a freshman. It has many good points, but lacks good examples.

I really liked this book. It was an easy read full of useful information and examples. I liked its practical approach and the attitude it fostered. It promoted a go-for-it attitude. And rightly noted that you learn from doing and correcting mistakes. It also rightly pointed out that you have to be constantly learning. All of which I agree with. It was a book well worth reading and following up on its suggestions. From my experience, most of what Zipursky suggests is right on.
