A lifesaver. Certainly a convenient time saver.
I can understand someone being skeptical about this product or even finding it lazy. After all between the stove and the microwave, and even electric tea kettles, why would we REALLLLLLY need a product that heats a bit more than a cup of water to a boiling point? But in terms of convenience this product was for me a must have. When I microwave a cup of water, depending on which coffee cup I use, I run the risk of the mug itself getting so hot that I can't touch it. Using the stove I end up with more water than I sometimes need. Same for electric tea kettles. This gives me what I want for a cup of coffee, tea, or soup, in about 90 seconds without having to fight with too much water or a mug that gets too hot. It also gets me what I want quickly and easily. I had one of these years ago when I lived with my Mom and Grandma, and it was used every single day. Seriously, every single day, typically several times a day between hot water for drinks, oatmeal and on and on. After about 3 years it died and none of us ever got around to replacing it. We had looked in a few stores but never saw one. We tried a few electric tea pots with various degrees of personal enjoyment, but none of us were ever as happy as we had been with a product like this. Then a couple months back I was heating up water in the microwave in one of those mugs, you know the kind we all have them, where you just can't use them in the microwave no matter what the bottom says, because they get insanely hot even if your water is barely warm. I burned myself and swore like a sailor and wished I'd had one of the hot water dispensers like we had years ago. So after iceing my hand I hit amazon and found this and ordered it. It's been several weeks now and it gets used several times a week for heating up hot water. And I've not burned myself once. But I will say this does get water hot, very hot since it takes it to a fast boil, and you need to remember that if you are making yourself a cup of tea for example. Since it will take it a bit to cool off so that you can drink it without burning your tongue. Most of us have figured out about how long we need to microwave our water to get certain temps, this really only has one. Great for home, the office, or a dorm. Any place where you might have a space issue or appliance use issue. It's nicely small and compact. The cord is kinda short though so it needs to be close to the outlet. I highly recommend it and it's a good price. I've had mine for several weeks and don't know how I got along without one in the years between owning the two. This product doesn't reinvent the wheel, it just boils water, a set amount, very quickly and very easily.

Not a bad device for quick heating water
I was looking for something to make cups of hot chocolate. I not longer want to use a Kurig as the water remains in the piping and you get scaling and bacteria issues. The microwave is not always convenient - especially an over-the-range where you have to reach up to handle a cup of boiling water. Sunbeam Hot Shot Hot Water Dispenser does heat fairly quickly and because it only heats the water you put in it, you don't have to worry about water remaining in the device creating mold and/or bacteria issues. The price of this Sunbeam Hot Shot Hot Water Dispenser is affordable to where if it only last a season it still would have been worth it. The dispenser mechanism seems "ok" for the price of this device. The whole device is plastic (except for the internal heating device) and feels a bit flimsy when the dispenser if pressed. The dispenser button pushes up a plunger in the heater reservoir. Overall this a great device for making hot chocolate, tea or instant coffee. It is small enough to keep on your office desk, kitchen counter, or anywhere you want it. All you need is access to a power outlet.

Bought it again
I've been using one version or another of the Hot Shot for more than 20 years. The earlier versions came with their own carafe; convenient but not essential. The one I just bought is my fourth, and it is doing its work in my office, while the older one stays at home. There is one slight difference with the new one that I'm less happy with. Read on. The first one our family had (I bought it for my parents) eventually broke. The heating switch shared the front of the Hot Shot with the dispenser button, and it eventually broke off after many years. The next one doubled as a mousetrap! The cover of it had a little piece at the bottom that was right angle to the main cover. Apparently a mouse got into the house and was climbing over the Hot Shot and stepped on that right angle piece. The mouse fell to the bottom of the heating vessel and the cover closed. (I'm happy to say that it was empty and it didn't turn on!) The next morning I heard strange sounds coming from the Hot Shot, and once I was ready to face whatever was inside I brought it onto my deck and tipped it over. Out popped the mouse who then ran for cover. Needless to say, I decided it was time for a new Hot Shot. So after using the new Hot Shot for a few years I decided I needed to make my own tea or coffee at work rather than running to the cafeteria for it. When I tried to place my extra-tall mug under the dispenser, I discovered that it wouldn't fit without tipping it slightly--enough so if that if it were full it would spill. The older one at home had no trouble with the fit. This tight fit is a very minor problem. I use the Hot Shot at work every day, and I use the one at home several times a day, heating water for everything, even for cooking on the stove--it's that much faster than the cooktop for heating water that I can usually heat two or even three full batches (16 ounces each) of water in the Hot Shot faster than the stove can heat one batch of 16 ounces. When I'm impatient (most of the time), I use the Hot Shot as well as the stove to reduce the overall heating time of almost any quantity of water. Too bad you can't use it for other liquids! Bottom line--A simple and great product. Does exactly what it claims to do and it's very dependable. Definitely worth having.
