the front can be enclosed as its two separate zipper openings. The bottom shelf is the same as the top shelf - a plastic shelf with a fabric covering over it.

The portable wardrobe is very stable for what it is intended for. I have mine up against a wall. As long as it is not placed in a high traffic area where it can be banged into, it should be fine.
