HiyaHiya Flyers Double-Pointed Flexible Knitting Needles (US 1/2.25mm)

I have been 'watching' these needles for a couple of years. I happily and easily knitted boot socks on DPs several years ago but now my hands are 80 years old and more stiff than before. I looked at magic loop and decided the fiddle factor did not go away after the fourth row of the cuff. Two circulars had cords waving every which way and 9" circulars weren't helpful with the stiff fingers. My Hiya Hiya Flyers came late last night. I cast on early this morning. After a false start (I overlooked an extra stitch), the fiddly went away after the third row and I am happily whizzing along. You knit with the third needle instead of the fourth or fifth. It is difficult to lose stitches off the end of the slightly bent needles. The sharp points make it easy to knit the tight little stitches we use to make good sock fabric. I think I will go outside in the sunshine and do a happy dance. Good tools make any job easier. Treat yourself, you are worth it. I loved my size twos so much I bought the 1.5 in bamboo. Pink mentioned that they were not as sharp. They ARE not as sharp and after you use them for a while they are just as fast as the metal ones. When you use bamboo you have to break them in. The oil on your hands and in the wool lubricates them and the 000000 grade 'sanding' delivered by the wool sliding over them finishes the job. I always enjoy wool yarn on bamboo. It gives me a tiny peek into the world of my ancestors--knitting with all natural materials.

HiyaHiya needles are a wonderful balance between smooth enough for fast knitting and just enough grip that they’re not too slippery. Sharp points make for fast knitting. The design of the flyers makes knitting small circumference projects in the round faster and easier, also much easier to avoid ladders (if you knit, you know!). I prefer the flyers to magic loop or two circulars, and they’re much less fussy than juggling dpns.

I was skeptical, because I’m a die-hard DPN fan. Can’t stand magic loop. But these little fellas are great! I love the extra little give that the cord provides, it makes it super easy to knit small circumference in the round without ladders, because you can get your transition stitches nice and snug. The sharp tips took some getting used to. They are marginally sharper than my Chaiogoos, but they work excellently for decreasing on my socks. I’ve had these about a month and I’ve already done two pairs. I just need another set so I can have a whole pair going at the same time!

I purchased these needles while working on a pair of Fair Isle fingerless mitts with a fairly complex pattern. Double points were giving me a lot of trouble with my floats between needles, so I decide to try those fancy new "flexible" knitting needles. They revolutionized my knitting!! After a short initial adjustment period, my mittens started flying off the needles, with no more ladders, and no fiddling with double-points. I tried the Addi needles first, but I'm not a real Addi fan, and found that I only like the side with the "pointier" needle tip. That's why I bought the HiyaHiya's; they have a reputation for sharp points, and these did not disappoint. The only small problem I had (which was entirely my knitting style) was that I tend to push the tips of the needles with my fingers when I knit, and these puppies are SHARP. After a while, I had to force myself to stop pushing the needle tips, because my fingers were getting sore. But I like sharp tips; to me they just make the knitting easier, especially when dealing with finer yarns, or complex stitches. Some people find it difficult to adjust to this needle style. Fair enough, but if you are not a double-point fan, these are definitely worth a try.

I have knit many, many, many, many many pairs of socks with hiya flyers and I absolutely love them. I love that one end is a little sharper than the other. I get into a rhythm so that I'm always picking up my stitches with that sharper end and yet I have the rounder end if I need it. The sharp end isn't so sharp that I wind up stabbing my finger in the same exact spot over and over and over again. Like I do with some of the brands that are very sharp. I do own some of those very sharp brands and use them for certain things but i don't care for the way they have a tendency to split stitches and for the way they have a tendency to stab my finger in the same spot over and over and over again lol they do have their place and sometimes they use them. But hiya hiya needles just work for me. I have bought many many sets, usually because my puppy chews the cables on them but I still spend the money on more sets. I like them that much! I will say these short circular flyers are tending to get crazy expensive simply because they're popular and they don't cost any more to manufacture now than they did several years ago When they were 17 bucks a pair and not many people even knew about them and that is annoying. But I'll still buy them.

Why did you pick this product vs others?: To try something new. These needles are great!! Less fanangling of needles. Nice and sharp and made well. I’ll be buying more sizes.

These are relatively new on the scene, and are a sort of hybrid between dpns and magic loop; easier than either, and I’m a huge magic loop fan. But these are great. They take a bit of getting used to, but any new technique does. And they are probably best for really small in-the-round things like socks, the flexi-bit is very two inches long. But I would totally recommend them to anyone who, like me, can’t be doing with dpns and who finds magic loop a bit cumbersome - these flyers speed things up, and the quality of the needles themselves is, like all HiyaHiya needles, excellent - sharp, smooth, great.
