Kovels' New Dictionary of Marks: Pottery and Porcelain, 1850 to the Present

This book will sit next to my computer so that I have access to the page after page of clearly pictured marks to help me identify unknown pieces. I had heard good things about this book and preliminary perusal backs up those recommendations!

The book is very helpful

Most of the bad reviews I think are from people that were frustrated in trying to use the book. If you know the name of the manufacturer, first go to the index. It will show you on which page and which box the makers mark is shown. Some manufacturer's have 12 makers marks and you have to flip to 12 different pages, but once you understand that the book is also designed so that you can find the makers mark by shape or letters, you understand why they are all over the place. The book has a LOT more makers marks than any other reference book I have. It really is a wonderful reference book once you understand how to use it.

Honestly speaking I was expecting more from this book. It’s just laying now, don’t use it.

great book I bought is by mistake. I have two. It will not go to waste. Good to have one at home and one at shop. Very Helpful. Everyone into pottery should have one or two.

Comprehensive

The Kovels never disappoint! This book has helped me to learn so much about the world of pottery and porcelain. A must for the beginner as well as collectors who are always finding new pieces with mysterious marks. Laid out in the best format I have found for looking up the origin of a porcelain or pottery mark. I'm sure this endeavor covers many years of work and several generations of true passion!

I knew this book would not cover contemporary marks (copyright is 1986) but I was expecting more from such a reputable name. If you see my photo example, you can see Belleek marks that go only until 1965. That's basically 20 years missing until this books *present day* of 1986. Between 1965 and 1986 there were 2 more Belleek backstamps (10 between 1965 and 2023) So I suppose this book can help narrow down and identify a maker, but I was hoping to be able to better date pieces, at least until what the book claimed as up to 1986.
