If i want to record the video, do i have to purchase nest aware or can i pair with amazon cloud and integrate the video storage that way?

Blue Iris now supports recording of Nest Cams, with the caveat that you have to make the camera public. But, before going there, you can find much cheaper IP cameras that will allow you to do the same thing more easily and securely. This is not an anti-endorsement of the Nest Cam and Nest Aware product. I’ve worked with more traditional cameras, and having Nest eliminate the need to personally maintain the server, cloud storage, port forwarding, and public URLs, while providing well-polished apps is arguably a bargain.

Will the video record where there is no wifi? does the device store recordings then you upload later to the cloud?

No, the device up loads directly through your wifi to nest cloud. You have immediate access to any recorded footage.

Can I use it as a baby monitor? If I am asleep and the baby starts crying will it automatically play the audio for me on my phone or just an alert?

It works as a baby monitor, but it definitely works best in tandem with a tablet or Google home hub so you have a screen to look at other than having to bring it up on your phone. We use both an iPad and a hub to keep an eye on our guy with the nest cam, but the hub has the added benefit of being a digital photo frame as well! And the hub is much cheaper if you don't already have a tablet, before we had a tablet we just used our hub

Is the Nest Cam compatible with z-wave or zigbee devices and hubs?

Correction - the Nest Cam is first to be set up in your Nest app with your nest account. Once you've set it up on its native app, Wink can use Nest's API to populate the same information in Nest into Wink -- the nest cam does NOT pair directly to your Wink Hub. This allows you to monitor your camera(s) with an offline Hub. Please stop giving false information in answers.
