This will save you $10 worth of frustration and make your dealings with ESP8266-01s painless
I love the Prog/UART switch. It lets me program, unplug, switch, and plug back in for instant debugging, without worrying with 6 jumper cables or a breakout board. The devices themselves allowed me to flash an entire classroom's worth of ESP8266s in about 5 minutes. Compared to the way I had been doing it, this is the lap of luxury. Remember, the ESP must hang over the programmer board (there's an arrow on the board showing this). Otherwise, it's foolproof, fast, easy, and works with the Arduino IDE like they were made for each other.

does what it says on the tin
options in the review form include "sheerness" and "thickness". i can't believe those metrics would matter to anyone, but yeah, this thing is small. you can see that in the photos - it's the width of a USB connector and and the PCB is about twice as long as the connector itself. that's small. but far more interesting is that it worked. these are really cheap little USB->UART devices with a header specifically designed for the ESP8266, including a switch to select either programming or operational mode. that's it. i've programmed a dozen ESP8266 modules and put this in the drawer waiting for the next project. glad i bought it.

Handy programmer with switch
If you deal with ESP-01 modules in your builds, this is a convenient way to program and test them. We have four of these at the shop and haven't had any issues. Much easier to grab one of these, plug your module in, flip the program switch and flash rather than wiring up something on a proto-board.

These ESP-01S programmers use a CH340G USB-To-Serial chip and are more convenient than using flying-wires to connect as I previously was. I don't recommend activating the WiFi radio while attached, as the ESP-01S can draw a lot more power in certain settings than these adapters can provide; the USB descriptor is for 98 mA (under half a Watt before VBUS and regulator drops are considered). A switch is used to toggle programming mode (via grounding GPIO0), not a RC circuit.
