Can you use liquid from can in chowder?

This brand’s liquid is just water and salt; I always drain it. Some other brands of canned clams do pack theirs in clam juice.

I have never had one that smells or is gray. If something does smell right that usually is a sign that is it bad. I know I wouldn’t use it.
