One fact I do recall about lion cubs is that even if several mothers have given birth, one lioness takes over the duties of raising them all. Why would this be a 2 piece if the cub doesn't come out of the mother's mouth?

I guess, it is a 2 piece as it literally has two connected pieces. The cub is inseparable from it's mother's mouth, the toy is very cool and does look very realistic.
