Wilton Mechanics Bench Vise, 5" Jaw Width, 5-1/4" Jaw Opening, 3-3/4" Throat (Model 745)

Very nice addition to our workbench. Although this is not the American made model, it is exactly what I wanted. It is a robust unit and nicely manufactured.

Come on, it’s a Wilton. It’s a great vice and a pretty good value. I have another Wilton and a Baileigh and they are all awesome.

As advertised. Good, solid, shaft turns cleanly and smoothly.

I received this vise from CPO Outlets an Amazon outside vendor, via FedEx in just 3 days after ordering it ! So that is EXCELLENT SERVICE. This Chinese made vise feels very heavy and is pretty sturdy looking but there are no identifying model numbers or any other identification on the vise itself besides the name WILTON. You can measure of course the jaw opening etc. etc, and verify that you got indeed a 6" vise, but did you get the model you ordered, you wonder ! The BOX indicates model #21500 and says Lifetime Waranty, but there is no identifying paperwork in the box itself except for a piece of paper with the template on it for the bolt hole locations for this vise and other similar vises. Like you really need a template for locating the bolt hole locations for a vise ? Since this template is so it seems, also applicable to other vise models somewhere on this paper it mentions 2 yr. warranty, but for what ? And which model ? Are you also supposed to keep the box for all the time you own this vise in case you DO need some kind of service later on ? Hopefully this will never be necessary ! On top of that, since the outside of this box's lifetime warranty insignia also mentions "limited" which means the warranty is only to the original purchaser, you have to keep your original receipt forever. Even in this case, what prevents some unscrupulous service center say 15 years from now, saying that the vise you brought in, is not the vise that the box and the purchase receipt you managed to save for all those years, belongs to, since there are no identifying model numbers on the vise itself ! These are just some observations I had to mention because even WILTON's own web site is not very helpful and clear on this. For the hefty prices all these vises sell for I think WILTON should be clearer and less vague with their warranty and other info. and at least have the model numbers for it's products clearly stamped on them ! I further have to mention that the vise was well packed, and generally, heavily greased up all over, to prevent rust, and the box it came in is "fairly" sturdy but was somewhat damaged during the shipment of it's heavy contents. I was NOT double wrapped but there was no damage to the vise itself.

I've owned this vise for a few years now and love it. I don't abuse it, but put it through the paces and it has held up remarkably well, with zero issues. It needed a little dressing when I got it, but the alignment was quite good even so. The lockdowns are tight and hold securely, as do the jaws. I wish they would have used hex bolts instead of phillips to hold the jaws, but that is easily remedied. Overall, bang for buck, one of the best vises I've owned.

Very good vice to put on the back of a truck

Got this vice to replace a smaller one in my garage workshop. When it arrived, I thought it would be too big & heavy but after installation it works well in the limited space I have. Don't fasten it to a flimsy or cheap homeowner's bench. It needs a solid, substantial work surface & heavy bolts to be safe. I took mine apart for cleaning and lubing with wheel bearing grease, which smoothed things out. Now it feels very precise and strong. A great vice & good value.

Disappointment is the word how I feel. I don't know why I thought that because its a Wilton, it'll be much better than my current 60 years old shabby vice. Maybe because Wilton website is perfect, therefore you think, the products are perfect. I expected it to make me feel good. Nope. Hence, if you're considering this 21300 744 model, my advice No1 is to NOT have your hopes too high. The jaws will not meet parallel; one jaw will be higher than the other, on one side, but not on the other; there will be debris inside, in all joints and threads; and no grease on main screw; and scratches. My advice No2 is to re-consider buying a new vice or at least this vice. If I knew what low quality I would get, I would not buy it. I would just clean up and re-paint the old vice for $20 and be much happier. So unless your old vice cracked and fell apart, don't buy a new one. Advice No3 - revise your requirements for a new vice, don't look for 4 mounting points or for double-lockdowns or for something what you can't get. Because for Canadians, very little choice is made available, and what is available, like this 744 vice, is only sold by a single supplier and at 3 times the price. If by now, you haven't changed your mind, read my comments again - you will save yourself from huge disappointment. All in all I do not recommend this vice. New edit: forgot to mention, the jaw opening is NOT 4 1/2" as stated in the specs, but in actuality, the practical opening is 4" as the main screw disengages at 4 1/8". For me, not a big deal, but for someone else, could be a big surprise. New edit #2: discovered another surprise - mounting holes are of smaller diameter. In the specs, mounting hole is 9/16" and recommended bolt diameter 1/2". However, don't rush to buy 1/2", because it won't fit. The vice that I just received, has actual hole diameter 0.488", hence, 1/2 (0.5) inch bolt will be too big. Product dimensions can change without notice, and the drawings become outdated. I recommend you wait to receive the vice, then measure the actual hole, and then buy the bolt that fits the hole and not the drawings.

Solid vise. Great quality. No complaints. You get what you pay for. This is no entry level vise. Does everything you need it to do
