AKA can this give me a reading at 10 inches? 5 inches etc into a pile so I can see temps?** A: The temperature sensitive portion is the last 2 inches at the tip of the pointed end of the probe. So you don't have to necessarily put the entire stem into the compost pile. **Q: Is the therometer suppose to rattle? I recieved two thermometers both rattled as if something is shattered inside. Thanks.** A: Hmm. You should not be hearing noises with a "pro" product. The innards are all metal so it's unlikely that something "shattered". I think you are hearing the sounds of of sloppy, careless, or maybe even incompetent assembly.
