In Francis Ford Coppola's filmization of the John Grisham best-seller, Matt Damon plays a young Memphis lawyer who helps a man stricken with leukemia battle a powerful insurance company that has rejected his claims. Danny DeVito is Damon's resourceful mentor, Claire Danes a battered young wife he helps. With Jon Voight, Mickey Rourke, Mary Kay Place, and Danny Glover. 135 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English, Portuguese, Spanish. Review: Great film, top cast, great HD picture quality on Japanese Blu-ray - The story, by attorney-turned-very-successful-author John Grisham, is quite interesting and a tearjerker as well. The screenplay was written by, and the film was directed by, Francis Ford Coppola. This film has wonderful courtroom drama, and a great "legal world" introduction outside of the courtroom, as we see how a young, new attorney, played by Matt Damon, learns the ropes at a small, hustling, ambulance-chasing law firm. I won't say much more about the VERY GOOD plot, as I'm sure it's been discussed here at length by others, but I'll just say that the cast is truly excellent, with a LOT of big names, and they all did a great job in their performances. Jon Voight, one of the stars, turned in an excellent performance as the lead attorney at a prestigious law firm representing a health insurance company that denied a claim, thus denying life-saving treatment, to a dying leukemia patient (Voight's character opposes Damon's character in court), and I praise Voight in this film as someone who is not a huge fan of his. Danny DeVito was excellent, as usual, the same with Matt Damon, who is the real star, also Mickey Rourke as the head of Damon's law firm and an uncredited Danny Glover as the judge, turned in excellent performances. As did Claire Danes and some of the OTHER big names (incl. Roy Scheider, Teresa Wright [in her final role], and Mary Kay Place) and some of the lesser names, too. Andrew Shue is certainly cast way away from type in a small role as a physical abuser of his wife, played by Danes. The picture quality of this Blu-ray is excellent, and remember, Japanese Blu-rays such as this one are Region "A," which is the standard region in Japan, as it is in the US. So, don't have any worries about region compatibility if you live in the US, this Blu-ray disc plays fine in US Blu-ray players. I highly recommend this film and blu-ray. Review: ALWAYS A GREAT MOVIE!! - ALWAYS A GREAT MOVIE! From the beginning to the end it is a movie that keeps your attention and has you rooting for the underdog and, even, the lawyer!! Great acting by all parties!!

While this is a good film..
... adaptation of the book, some artistic license taken, it makes several points regarding the law and how it is applied not so obvious in the book. The first point made is newly minted attorneys are no match for experienced older attorneys. That is in fact, one of the structural parts of the film. The second point is that no one gets where they want to be without help. Every one needs all the help they can get on both sides. The third point made is some things are legally right and morally wrong. There are several instances, and the inverse is true as well: there are things morally right and legally wrong. Some instances of that as well. There are other punctilio, but the most important point regarding the law is made last : sometimes the best that can be done isn't good enough. Some victories are hollow, and sometimes winning feels just like losing.

Relevent Even Today. One of the best movies ever made because of its message!
Although this story was written in a time before it was illegal for insurance companies to deny claims because of a "pre-existing condition" there are many seriously ill patients dying in their beds due to insurance companies refusing to cover the treatment that could save or extend their lives. I live in a state where the healthcare system is really bad. I'm on Medicare and also Medicaid. Their number one objective is to save themselves money; not to help patients. I am denied treatment options on a frequent basis because I'm told "Your insurance won't cover it." Some of my conditions are rare and would require me to go out of state for care because no specialists exist here, yet I don't have the money to pay any of those expenses out of pocket and most doctors here don't want to take the time to do the paperwork involved. The medications I'm offered could put me into liver failure so the doctor had to take me off the one I was on last week, and he has refused to even inform me about the newer and safer ones because he assumes the insurance wouldn't cover them. My blood pressure is getting increasingly unstable and liver enzymes and pain level going up and all my doctors can do is watch as I go downhill. Had I gotten the care and referrals I needed 5 years ago this might have been prevented. Now it's just a matter of time before I pass away. Sadly, I'm not the only one in this boat. This has become all too commonplace and way too readily accepted. Insurance companies should not get the power to decide who lives and who dies, and no human being should be allowed to suffer for lack of money, but the whole medical system is stepping back and letting them enact what amounts to Social Darwinism. If we don't start to change this rationing environment now there will be no future for our children and grandchildren when they fall ill. The Rainmaker tackles a very important subject matter; maybe the most important of our time.

Badly released movie. No original (English) soundtrack. This edition should even be boycotted by the Germans. Mockery of customers.
