I just put it on the table, lay the lid on top till it heats up the air and burp it a couple of times. I've also had a corner pop loose in the microwave if I've not popped it loose in advance. Both of these situations have been remedied by the addition of this burp valve on top of the red lid. Now I can just crack that loose and put it in the fridge or the microwave without concern. Kudos to the Rubbermaid folks for this rather innovative yet uncomplicated design change. I don't know if they are doing this on all of the tops or just a few. It's not often needed so I'd hate to see an expense that isn't necessary, but I know I'll happily take this on a few of them. Technically speaking you aren't supposed to use these for cooking. However, the instructions say that 30 seconds in the microwave won't be a problem. I've found that to be true except for fats. Fats will get too hot for these. As for sizes, I like the variety though I'd happily trade 20 of those tiny containers for one 7 or 9 cup. The tiny ones are great for storing a bit of salad dressing or diced onion, or taking a minimal amount of sauce on a picnic, but that's about it.
