Ocean Soul

I don't often buy pretty underwater coffee table books - because I read them once and put them on the shelf. This one refuses to go to the shelf. The text is enjoyable reading and I now feel like I know Brian Skerry ... but the images evoke such emotion - from compassion, to wonder, to concern ... that I find myself picking up the book often ... and sneaking 15 minutes to visit Brian's photographs over and over. As an underwater photographer I appreciate his technical mastery, but most of all, I know he named the book correctly - Ocean Soul. The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, CA is hosting a Dec 2012 - March 2013 gallery showing of Brian's images and I hope to meet him and tell him how much I am enjoying this book, week after week.

Brian Skerry's photographs are so magnificent that it can be tempting to breeze through his narrative to get to the next picture of a whale, squid, or coral. But don't hurry past his words; Skerry is a fine writer who transports you to his underwater worlds and introduces you to the sentient and intelligent beings that survive sometimes harsh environments and the scarring effects of human activities. I bought this book for my mother-in-law, having been intrigued by a review. Then I spotted it in my library, so had the opportunity to read and view it myself. It is a treasure that I want for my personal library.

Purchased "Ocean Soul" as a gift for my daughter. It is an absolutely beautiful book & very informative. The photos are beautiful. She loves it. And of course the order & delivery thru Amazon was great as usual.

Brian Skerry can not only take the most incredible underwater photos, but lets one see the souls of his most beautiful subjects. The text is very well written and perfectly appropriate. A lovley book.

Bought this book for my son who is an avid international diver. He was absolutely delighted with it. Turns out he is planning some trips based on features highlighted in the book. Great gift!

I had purchased this book for my dad as part of a Christmas present, as the cover shows, it looked to be an extraordinary book! Unfortunately, however, the shipper did not package the book correctly for shipping, when it arrived the cover pages was tore in many places, either from bouncing around in the box or was tore before it left them. Was embarrassed for my dad to open something that was damaged.

I got this book for someone who scuba dives a lot as a present - absolutely stunning underwater photography! A few of the images are quite hard hitting, as there are some major issues of environmental abuse taking place in our oceans, but to me this is an important part of the theme and message of what this amazing man has lived and discovered over a lifetime of exploring and documenting the worlds seas. Beautiful.

After finding out about this book on a website that was talking about over fishing and marine life conservation, I was disappointed to find out that only 5 pictures out of the entire book are around this topic. The author speaks about his love for the ocean life and how he hopes we can protect it, however I was expecting a firmer stand around this issue. A story that goes from nature to our interaction with nature through fishing, poaching, polluting and so on. The author chose not to approach this topic as he probably considers they are too controversial. Obviously not everyone can be an activist, but showing the realities of fishing is not choosing sides. You can maintain your objectivity while still showing the reality. The book is filled with pictures of happy manatees and turtles. If that's what you are looking for, buy it. It's a good book to shuffle through in a hotel reception.
