I can't give you an exact but they have been using similar shims in Europe for about thirty years. I can't see an 500 lb aquarium having any effect on these.

What are the dimensions? One answer said 1-3/4 square but in the pictures they are rectangular.

you are correct, they are not square. They are 1 5/8" wide. Their total length is about 3 1/4"; but each end is tapered, which you will want to remove for certain jobs. Without these tapered ramps they are about 2 7/16" long.

Can these be used with heated pipe? (heated steam boiler return line)

I would say no, they are plastic and I think they would melt or at least warp with contact heat

Is everyone getting 40 pieces? What’s considered 10? Is it multiples of the 6 small pieces or the whole card?

Each card is perforated and can be separated into smaller pieces. If you zoom in on the picture, you can see the lines. I love these, BTW! I was a little hesitant to get them and I'm so glad I did!
