The Odyssey (Wordsworth Classics) Review: Awesome!! - Good quality Review: The translation for this particular edition is good, and the introduction is better than some others ... - This is a classic and perhaps one of the most enduring and iconic adventure stories of all time. A king, returning home from a long war, fighting his way through monsters, treachery, trickery, and nature, to be with his wife and son again, and then arriving to find his kingdom under attack by suitors, out to wed his assumed widow. This is one of the origins of the Hero archetype, and the embodiment of complete man in Western culture. It arguably contains a complete portrait of the male psyche, and the father-figure, when fathers were still valued and nigh worshiped. The story should be taught in Middle and High school as standard classic fare. The translation for this particular edition is good, and the introduction is better than some others I have seen for this tome.

TRANSLATED FROM ORIGINAL VERSE
All in verse. For a younger reader, I might recommend a paraphrased PROSE version, easier to understand.

What stupid questions for the Odyssey
What stupid questions for the Odyssey! "Is there violence?" etc. "How is the story narrated?" Kind of a third person -- first person mix. After all Homer tells the story, but most of the time he turns the narrative over to the hero Odysseus.

I bought this because it is the early modern Chapman translation. It really is excellent. Might not be to everyone's taste or philosophy of translation, and if you want an easier read there are loads to choose from. Book itself is surprizingly good quality for the very reasonable price. It has a slim but informative introduction, a glossary, and helpful notes.
