A quick follow-up: is it OK/safe to allow the motor to stall for say, less than 5 seconds? Or does that risk motor damage, fire, etc?

Would this work with a pully system to lift roughly 50lbs?

The short answer is yes it's possible. That being said you need to start with the torque output of the unit and calculate the amount of torque you will have available at the end of your pulley system and from that the amount of force available to lift the weight. Don't forget that there will be losses in the system so the actual torque available at the end of your system will be less than the theoretical.
