Can the tape be applied directly onto a wood stove, to seal the flue to it?

Accepted Answer

No. Aluminum isn’t durable when exposed to wood combustion byproducts, and it’s unlikely your peak temperature is below 600F. For a wood stove the correct way to seal the flue is to have a stove pipe that makes a tight friction fit on the outlet collar. If you have and old out of round tube with a snap-together seam buy a new tube with a welded seam. If you still can’t get as good a seal as you want, the only things I know of that will survive the 2100F temperature of an over-firing of the stove, a failed catalytic converter, or a chimney fire are 2000F muffler and tailpipe sealants, refractory cement, kaolin wool refractory material, and “water glass”. These are all cured at high temperature because they all use “water glass” as a binder (glue). Water glass is silica (glass) dissolved in (alkaline) water. The filler material in muffler cement/sealer/putty and refractory cement are similar, the grain size is smaller in the muffler products making them more useful in tight spaces. Kalolin wool is a non-asbestos mineral fiber available in thin wool strips and ropes that might’ve be useful for sealing stove outlet. All of these should be used to seal the inside of the joint. Combustion products would tend to erode the area of a leak and make an external seal ineffective in the long run.

I have never removed it while it was still adhered to the pipe. It will loosen itself if the temp exceeds 550 to 600*

I’ve used it on pellet stoves before with no problems I use it on my wood stove now with no issues

Can I use this to help secure/hold on a round chimney cap to chimney pipe (both metal)?

We used it around our oil heater and it did extremely well considering the heater got hot... I found it to be of great help.
