The Truth as Told by Mason Buttle: A National Book Award Finalist Middle Grade Story About Learning Disabilities and Hope for Kids (Ages 8-12) Review: Mason Buttle will stay with you long after finishing this book! - I just finished The Truth as Told by Mason Buttle by Leslie Connor. I also loved Waiting for Normal by Leslie. This book is very special. You meet Mason on the first page, and you're "hooked". Mason is a big boy. He is also dyslexic. Mason is endearing in every way. This is the kind of book that demands to be read aloud. I used Waiting for Normal for years in my read-aloud presentations. The first time I presented it was in Scotia, NY. I was staying at a motel in Schenectady, NY. I realized that I was staying at the approximate site where the book took place! I love books that make us think, feel, and maybe even choke up. Mason will stay with you after you finish the book. I would love to see a sequel already. Thank you Leslie Connor for your brilliant writing, and for your unforgettable characters. I will reread this book a number of times before I dare present it. My friend Barbara O'Conner said it best "Could I love a character more than I love Mason Buttle?" NO!! Teachers, and parents...you must read this book!! Review: lovable, unforgettable main character - I first picked up a copy of this book last year at a kid lit conference where I heard the author speak, and was so blown away by it I went on desertcart and got several more copies to give as gifts. This is truly one of the best middle-grade novels I've been fortunate enough to read. Mason, the protagonist, has a *lot* going on. Because he's the most incredibly lovable character ever, I was rooting for him so hard I nearly sprained something. It's been over a year since I read the book and I still think of him. And it didn't hurt that one of the supporting characters is a wonderful school counselor. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Mason Buttle
Heartwarming tale about misunderstood misfortune. Sad, happy, funny. A mix of all emotions. Great read aloud with my fourth grader. First heard about it when my sixth grader read it for her school library book club.

Parents read first, then decide.
Good story. I would have given it 5 stars if it was more appropriate for children. One set of parents are "two dads", which had no relevance at all other than the author trying to normalize gay parents for children readers. Most parents don't want their kids being exposed to that. It's a shame that one little unnecessary detail is in the book. Remember, this is for 8-12 yrs old.

A great read!
Simply a great read. Relatable, believable characters. I absolutely loved Mason Buttle...a good, honest soul, despite having had truly bad experiences in his life. The world could use more people like him. I'm glad to have had the chance to meet him. I can't wait to introduce my sons to him.

Fabulous read for children and adults
Tell ya what, Mason Buttle is someone we can all take a lesson from. A true friend, a smart, kind, amazing soul. “A person can’t know what they don’t know..” -Mason Buttle This story was great. If you have elementary aged children and even middle schoolers it’s a fantastic read.

Mason is a true hero.
My favorite book of the season so far. Mason is a wonderful character, struggling with so many things in his life, too many deaths, a family that's shut down, his own learning disabilities, and several local bullies who make his life miserable. But Mason is a true hero and triumphs at the end. More than anything, I loved his simple, innocent, truth-telling voice. This book is magical.

Excellent book for all
This is a heartwarming story for the underdog. As a parent of a dyslexic child that doesn’t always fit in, I appreciate the challenges Mason faces and the friends and inner strength he finds. It is listed as an AR level 2.7 worth 8 points. It is a high interest read for all preteens and teens. Short chapters and low Lexie level make it an easier read for many.
