The Dummies books are a great guide, for at least two reasons: 1) they are written with the same scope and sequence as our core-aligned books, and 2) The author does a wonderful job of explaining things in a sensible, non threatening way. This is great, because it has opened them up to accepting the information, and they even smiled as we read the intro! I bought one for myself as well, so we can learn math shoulder to shoulder, all the way up to calculus, and possibly beyond. I've never been in trig or calculus classes, but my girls and I will move forward in confidence together. I should also mention that I also bought Kumon for extra practice, and Sylvan book for each as well. Maybe I went a little overboard, but I can tell you that they all fit together in scope and sequence rather nicely, and provide a nice foundation for our "group learning," individual practice, and opportunities to play learning games together. Review: Good - This is a good primer on basic math and pre-algebra concepts. Like the other "for dummies" books, it distills the explanatory material that you get in the textbooks down to the most important points and then has tips for solving problems, cautions about common mistakes, provides some examples, and gives some problems to work on. It will help develop the fundamental skills that you will need before getting into algebra. I will say, that you need to be aware of your learning style before you get this. Even though it is an easier read than a textbook, if you do not learn well by reading and learn better through more of a traditional lecture and seeing problems worked out, this may not be right for you.
