You have to run a solution through the unit, so no. It is pretty simple, and there are instruction in the manual

I have a two yr old that loves our water cooler how are the buttons on top? A deterrent?

There is a locking mechanism on the hot water. But not on the cold. Easy access to kids and easy for kids to use and get into. It is kinda tall so it's not so easy for a toddler to reach also

What’s the water volume dispense rate? I am looking for high volume dispenser to fill pitchers of water for coffee.

Same as from the tap. Though if filling pitchers regularly is what you’re looking for, the fact that it is necessary to change out the bottles I would probably purchase a water filter for my tap, I use this unit mainly for cold water and hot tea.
