Nice quality feel, smooth, heavy, quiet
I had an old Dynabee back in the late 1970s - this one is a bit heavier, feels much more precise and solid, and works really well. The little string pull starters are great if you can't get it started easily by itself - I have a pretty good success rate spinning it up by hand then teasing it up to speed gently. I find that it is quiet enough to watch TV while using it. You can control the resistance by how much effort you put in, and when you get going hard, the resistance is strong enough to get a good hand/forearm workout very quickly. From reading other's comments, I see there are a few different grips/positions that I have not tried, so I look forward to those. I also found, to my slight surprise, that one hand requires a lot more focus and attention than the other, and I can't really sustain it well with that hand, so that is another good goal to work on!

Great hand work out
These are great hand exercisers. The work out the hand, fingers and wrist. They are actually fun to use. I went with the string pull version (drastically cheaper) to see if I would like it or even use it. The string pull is straight forward and gets the unit spinning well enough.

Strengthens Wrists but Can't Do It for too long without becoming achy
So I've been playing violin and piano for awhile along with using a computer a lot and I developed a bad case of tendonitis. I wear wrist braces on both arms during the night to help prevent my wrists from bending. I've had this condition for a couple months and had to stop playing piano and in orchestra for a couple months. I decided that I can't wait any longer for this to heal because I was upset that I couldn't do anything without severe wrist pain that lasted for hours. Several of my family members told me that I should exercise it and some people told me about those balls that you squeeze in your hands. So I tried the exercises which didn't really work and I didn't want to spend money on squeezing a ball that may or may not work. So I found this and decided to give it a try. I was skeptical about buying it because of the lack of costumer reviews.I decided to give it a shot because i heard it was good for rsi(repetitive stress injuries). So when I first got it I found it very hard to get it started. You have to put the string on similar to yo-yo and pull HARD while spinning your wrist in a motion similar to opening a door knob. After 30 seconds of this my wrists were tired and sour. They were sour for the first two weeks after using this once a day and one minute on each hand. Then on the third week I discovered that I could actually do it for a full minute. I noticed that when I went back to play violin that my wrists didn't hurt as much after playing as they used to. My hands also felt more relaxed and I discovered that I had less wrist pain and I could do more activities for longer without any pain. So I am going on my fourth week after using it for one minute on each hand once a day. I notice that I'm having more trouble than before doing it for a full minute because I guess that it's wearing out from constant use and it takes more force to spin. My wrists are also starting to ache again and fell very tired. So I am going to try to do it every other day instead. I will post an update on how my wrists are in a week or two from constant use.

Great for my tennis elbow - and just plain fun to use.
I use it daily when my tennis elbow acts up, and it keeps it under control. Kind of fun to use, too. I keep it in my office where it makes a cool conversation piece, as when people walk in and ask what it is, they're always interested in why I'm using it and how it works. I've alternatively used a 10-lb. dumbbell, but I find this better. It takes up less room and I think the rotation it causes works our my forearm muscles better. I previously had the model that lit up, which I did like and would get that next time. It doesn't function any differently, but it's more fun as the light gets brighter the faster you make it go. So it probably makes you keep going a little longer each time. Unfortunately, I lent it to someone one and never got it back. :-( The build quality on these is great. I've dropped them many times, thrown them around, and they've both kept working perfectly. Regarding starting them, I don't use the included cord. Instead, I just swipe it along the carpet or plastic chair pad (that protects the carpet from the chair) and get it going from there. Occasionally I can get it going by swiping it along my glass-topped desk, but only about 50% of the time. I like to see where I can swipe it to get it going; I'm working on just using my fingers to spin it up... almost got it a couple of times but not yet!

Awesome device
I had carpal tunnel surgery for both hands and my therapist had me use this, among other things, so I wanted to have one at home too. The brand they had said it can replace up to 35lbs of free weights! The longer you do it, the more it burns in the shoulder when your arms are held out straight. Other brands had pictures of people using it with their arms down or maybe their palms facing up; to work different muscles I imagine. Itโs used to help grip and wrist strength, helps blood flow as well from what I read online. I had to watch a video off of YouTube to see how to really get it going but other than that it was pretty simple. The string you insert in the whole does not stick in it, so insert it and hold it there while wrapping it tightly around the spinner. Once itโs wrapped around it, quickly pull it out to get it going. Make sure to get a good grip on it while rotating your hand in a circle. If that still doesnโt help, just check YouTube out for other tricks and tips.

Useless
I am a physical therapist and I injured my wrist in May. Someone recommended this product and it has proven to be a waste of time. I was excited about using this as I am trying to improve my strength in order to return back to work. However, I am very disappointed and will not be adding this to my exercise routine. I even spoke to a fellow therapist and she was equally excited to add this to her treatment plans. Unfortunatley, I will inform her not to waste her time or money. I even thought it was perhaps user error and watched several youtube videos on this device. I would not recommend. Doesnโt spin well or for an adequate duration and seems to be lack luster in improving strength

Decent, but not long-lasting
My job involves a lot of keyboard use, resulting in occasional wrist pain, so I've been looking at various wrist exercisers to try to help. A gyroscopic wrist exerciser sounded more fun than some of the other tools out there, but I had never used one before, and couldn't quite justify a $50 purchase of something that might or might not work, so I purchased this (relatively) cheap one. It worked well enough, and helped my wrists, even though I only remembered to use it once or twice a week. Well enough, in fact, that I purchased one for a friend who was having more severe wrist pain. He took it to work with him, using it multiple times a day. Within a week he was no longer experiencing wrist pain. Within two weeks, he had managed to wear it out from constant use; its operation became noisy, and he could no longer get it started spinning without the string. I since went on to buy one of the fancier, metal gyroscopic wrist exercisers (the Ironpower force two). It was much quieter, much smoother, easier to start, and gave a more strenuous workout. It also has replaceable parts, in case the plastic rings it slides around on get worn out. The NSD Power Essential Spinner is a decent entry-level wrist exerciser, but it seems to have a limited lifespan. It is fine for occasional use, and a good way to tell if the gyroscopic spinners are for you, but don't be surprised if it wears out.

Really gets my forearm tired
I was always curious about these gyroscopes when I saw them at sporting goods stores over the years. When I read that the quality had gone down in the ones being sold in stores and also saw that this one by NSD includes a pull string to get it going I decided to pull the trigger and try it out. I think the pull string is important. I never enjoyed trying to get the lesser models up to speed. With the draw string I had it going right away and quickly got it really humming. That's when I noticed how hard it was getting to rotate my wrist and how tired I was getting within 30 seconds. You can take it slow and easy and go for quite a while but if you really want to push it then you can get the RPM's up and be completely exhausted in a minute. Then I pass it to my other hand and keep the spin going, back and forth between hands for a few sets. I've really enjoyed just pushing a different set of muscles and trying to strengthen my wrists to avoid carpel tunnel injuries. I would recommend this product because it's simple and it works, and also makes it a game of really getting it spinning fast. For even more of a game you might want to try the one with the RPM display but I didn't think the cost was worth it overall.

I honestly cannot say enough good things about this
I honestly cannot say enough good things about this! I love it! For as simple of a design as this thing is, it is an amazing developmental tool to have. I use it partly for my bodybuilding purposes, and partly for my fighting attributes training, making it a point to use it daily. The learning curve for using it is not as steep as others may suggest (at least it was not for me; rhythm to match the spin was established in a matter of seconds on my first try), and it only gets easier from there. I have gone on so far as to develop a total of four movement patterns for my training sessions, to get the most complete use of the spinner. Looking for a different, and effective way to train? This is the way to go!
