About one inch at the top, but it is very hard to get apart, once assembled.

How comfortable is the handle on these canes? I don't see that they are padded in any way.

The handle is not padded. If you are using the cane for balance, it fits nicely in the hand. If you are using it to support full weight for extended periods, it might not be comfortable. I used it while recovering form a shattered ankle and then when recovering from a broken knee. It was comfortable. I have recommended it to several people, and they enjoy it, too.

The grip is hard, can I buy a replacement grip? What kind should I buy?
