Happier, healthier and a whole lot wiser about food
This book will change your life--if you follow its advice. My son sent me a link to Joe Cross' movie, "Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead." I watched and quickly found myself researching Joe Cross--and the doctor that monitored his 60-day juicing journey (Joel Fuhrman, M.D., who's book, "Eat for Health," I also purchased). Needless to say, ninety days later, both my husband and I have lost weight, are healthier, and feel amazing--just as the subtitle of the book promises. If you have seen the video (Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead) you will find much of the book familiar. This reinforces the message of changing the way you eat to change your health, and is a good refresher. The book is well-researched, and provides good information about food, diets and common habits that lead to disease. It also provides easy and practical advice--and recipes--on how to juice, how to stick with it, and how to transition back to solid food. As the title of chapter 1 proclaims: Juicing is "a wy to live, not a way to diet." Plans include reboots for 3 days to 30 days, including recipe suggestions and recipes. There is a vegetable/fruit preparation chart, a helpful chart for substitutions if you do not like a particular ingredient, and a section about juicers to aid in your selection should you need one. (We bought the Breville juicer Joe Cross used in his 60-day reboot, which he now endorses, and is available through Amazon.) My husband and I juiced for 15 days. We did not follow the plan exactly (we chose different recipes), but did follow the recommendation to drink 4-6 juices a day. My husband "cheated" (which is OK according to Joe Cross (paraphrased): "If you get really hungry, drink another juice. If you're still hungry, eat a salad.")--and he still lost weight. I lost inches (I do not weigh myself) that showed in much looser-fitting clothes. We now mix juicing with solid food, sticking pretty close to Joe Cross's juicing/eating rule of 80% vegetables and 20% fruits every day. This is our new way of life and we are enjoying it--happier, healthier, and a lot wiser about food and food choices.

This book will change your life!
I'm a few weeks short of my 43rd birthday when I decided to take care of myself. I'm not extremely obese, I was overweight. I'm beginning to feel the effects of aging and I didn't even have a lot of chronic diseases, just knee arthritis. But I was already not sleeping well at night, lack of energy, some gastrointestinal issues (reflux and constipation). I used to be at the Y at 5am in an exercise class. I'm not new to fitness, and for taking care of myself with good lifestyle habits, but for some reason, I can't get back to my old self when I decided to loose weight. I've learned about juicing and Joe Cross as I've been researching about lifestyle changes. I decided to do the 10 day juicing plan. It was a lot of work at first, because the effects are all so worth it. I'm happy to report that my cholesterol had dropped from 205 to 148, just doing the 1-2 juices after the 10 day plan, and I am only on the 2nd month! I've been sleeping uninterrupted at night, I have so much energy. I have less arthritic knee pain, and I found another exercise that I love: swimming! I used to not like swimming because I get out of breath when only being halfway through the lane, but now I've been swimming laps. I get the exercise that I need without the pounding on my knees and without the sweaty feeling (I'm beginning to feel the symptoms of.menopause already). My gastrointestinal issues are gone. The weight loss is just the bonus. I've lost 10 lbs while I was in the 10 day plan, and 2 more after. I don't have any more sugar craving, and my taste buds have been trained to eat mostly fruits and vegetables. I have been asked multiple times what's my protein source, as we have become a nation of proteinaholics, but I'm positive that my new diet of fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds are the way to a better health! I have discovered what foods bother me. So it's either I eat only a small amount that won't bother me, or just not to eat that certain food at all. I've mentioned above that it was difficult at first, so I want to share with you some tips. 1. You will buy a lot of produce and it will fill your refrigerator. I have a family of 5, and of course I have to shop for them as well. I only bought 5-7 days worth of produce and if I know that my family will eat what's on the guide for that day, I cooked extra for my family as well. 2. For me, day 3 and 4 are the worst as far as the headaches occurring while you are first starting. But come day 5,I have so much energy! I used to have migraine headaches, but now they're gone! I took some time from work, as I work full time. So I was at home when I have all the headaches from detoxing from sugar. Oh but it's all worth it. Like I said above, my taste buds have been trained that even in my workplace where there's treats in the lunch room all the time, I just don't have the desire For them anymore. 3. Juicing will take time to cut and prepare the fruits and vegetables. I do my grocery shopping on the weekends and I juice all my juices for the week. I put the ones that I will not drink from day 3 onwards in the freezer, and just take it out the day before to defrost. Saves the space in my refrigerator too. 4. It seems like you have a bigger grocery bill at first. But after eliminating the treats from my shopping cart, and since we're eating less meat now, as I have discovered new recipes that my family likes too, I didn't have to add money to my grocery budget. I only added about 25% to my food budget when I was on the 10 day plan, but now it's just the same. 5. There are days when I don't feel hungry, but I feel like I need to eat something more substantial. Like I said you will get to know yourself. Even when I was on the 10 day plan, I eat a banana, or some nuts, or an avocado. I felt like I was so cold at times. I will add some soup on those days to warm me up. I'd honestly say that I didn't follow the 10-day strictly, but like I said you will get to know yourself. I got all those good side effects anyway still. I was blessed to be given a centrifugal juicer by a co-worker that is buying a new juicer. So I didn't have to buy a juicer to begin with. I have already given a copy of this book to her as a gift. She says that the recipes in this book had taken her juicing to a whole new level. By the way, I know some of the reviewers would say that they can find the recipes online for free. All the recipes in this book are delicious. I have to decrease the amount of celery to the juices that call for them, as those are the ones that tastes like "grass" to me. I have tried a few recipes from their website, but sad to say I don't find them delicious at all. So for now I will stick with the recipes that are in this book. There's a lot of juicing recipes in this book anyway, that I didn't find them boring even if I'm already in the 2nd month of incorporating juicing in my life. This book is good overall. I'm glad that they published this book, as I don't have to pay a huge amount for their guided reboot. I'm pretty much a diy-er in topics like these, and I'm the type who don't want to spend so much for things I can do on my own like this. Like I said it will change your life!

NEVER THOUGHT I'D JUICE!
I tried juicing in the past and felt dizzy and weak; got headaches and really didn't feel any benefit. Plus, I HATE anything green juiced. I had a friend really into green juicing and just a taste of her special juices made my whole body cringe. I also HATE coconut water so was very skeptical about having to drink that every day. I'm a senior citizen, so changing my tastes at this point were going to be a challenge. However, Joe's video was very inspiring and I needed to get in better shape. So I ordered the book and asked for a juicer for Mother's Day which my son bought for me on Amazon as well. I wrote a review for the juicer as well from my very novice stand point. Well, I decided to try to five-day Reboot because if I wasn't going to feel good the first three days, I sure wanted to see if there was any following benefits for the trip through healthy purgatory. Plus, I didn't want to commit to too much. Surprisingly, I found some of the juices much more tastier than I thought they'd be; and some were so good, I'd drink them even if not on a Reboot or a quest to lose weight. BUT, the first green juice was almost my undoing as was the coconut water. I gagged my way through them both the first day and then tried some different green juices I hated less for subsequent days and added fruit juices, as suggested in the book, to my coconut water. I eventually found some green juice favorites that I didn't hate at all and I really enjoyed some of the other juice colors. The coconut juice, even with juice, never became anything I liked and I had to change to other electrolyte containing liquids for fear I'd skip it altogether. You'll find your favorite juices and will love...or at least like them. Also, the plan developed a bit differently for me. I felt wonderful the first three days, then, on day four, I started feeling the symptoms that most people describe for the first three days. These lasted for a couple of days so I continued the juicing plan beyond five days to get past them. I transitioned out well and now eat a healthy vegan breakfast, juice twice a day making sure one juice is green (Can you believe it?); and switch between eating a plant-based dinner and a protein shake for dinner with two days a week treating myself to some quality organic meat with my husband. I had 40 pounds overall to lose and didn't have the big losses some of the users had, but I did lose eight pounds and am continuing to lose more slowly about a pound every three days. I may try another Reboot down the road, but I'm comfortable at this time. The book is a fabulous guide that answers a lot of questions I had. I don't think I would have ever stayed with juicing without it. The recipes are varied and the suggested substitutions are a life saver. I tried every recipe in the book and rated them on my own scale, bookmarking the ones I really loved If I had to have a negative -- it wouldn't be for the book, juicing or this program, it'd be for the constant washing of the juicer :) May I suggest wearing gloves as to not have chapped hands

A solid primer to juicing in general and doing your own "reboot" (juice fast) - worth the investment
Great book - good insight into Joe's philosophy of juicing and eating for permanent good health. Goes into a lot more detail about things sometimes skimmed over (or not mentioned at all) in the movie (FSND). I have tried about a half dozen of the recipes and they are great for getting started. Also a lot of good into on how to ease into and out of a longer juice fast like Joe did (and many people want to attempt when they see the benefits). My only complaint is one that is mentioned in a few other reviews - the organization isn't the best. But once you go through it and pick out the parts that are most useful (for me, recipes, fasting planner and shopping list, juicing guide for all fruits and veggies) then you can put a post-it or bookmark at each section and flip right to it. One tip - when juicing, plan on keeping the book AWAY from the juicing activity unless you don't care about water or juice spots getting on it :-)

Reboot for a better YOU!
I did the 15 day reboot and felt amazing! It was tough the first few days but I have an addiction to soda and this reboot helped me kick the habit. I've tried many other things to quit soda but I always came back to it. The recipe's make you feel full and satisfied and full of energy. For the ladies and men who want to help their ladies out: The week before I get my period I want to hibernate. Literally all I want to do is sleep and nothing in the world will stop me. I'm tired and my energy level plummets while my eating increases. I want to eat everything and anything. I become a bottomless pit that never gets full! Not good, right? When I started juicing all these issues went away, my energy increased and my appetite decreased! YES! It was the most amazing thing to experience. Yes I did loose weight and I have not gained it. I did not exercise during the reboot but I did start exercising after I finished the reboot. I have been exercising at least 4 times a week since then and have lost additional weight. I try to juice at least once a day now and when I start to feel sluggish I increase my juice intake, specially when Aunt Flow is around the corner. I recommend this book to everyone! The recipes are easy to follow and the shopping list is set up for each of the reboots. There is no second guessing or rethinking, you just do what the book says. You can't find a certain item in the grocery store, no problem the book has a list of substitutions in the back. If you live in the states you should have no problems going to any grocery store and buying the items. If you are like me and live over seas, say like in Okinawa, Japan sometimes it gets tricky but with the substitutions available I had no problem finding veggies. The dressings are super easy to make....Vinegar and Olive oil...can't go wrong. I did add some dried herbs to mine for an extra kick and it made it so much better. Add cilantro, basil, salt, and pepper to it and you won't be disappointed. Happy Juicing everyone!

Good plan
Following the plan in this book will help you lose weight. Don't just jump to the juicing plan without reading up to it. I did that and later found out that I should have modified my diet a bit before starting the juicing. That could have made my start-up easier. Juicing leaves you satisfied. The worst parts are the time to do the juicing and how much produce you have to buy, but you don't go around hungry.

Starvation Diet - But Try the Food Recommendations; They Work!
Powerful weight-loss and health secrets are contained within...but as with anything powerful, beware. Some people CANNOT handle the juice-only diet. I went practically insane, crying a lot, and when I finally let myself stop the Reboot, I ended up binging for three weeks, unable to get any sort of control of myself. I hadn't eaten like that in years, and never for so long. I finally discovered that the juice-only Reboot is *intended* to use your *starvation* response to your weight-loss advantage. Well, if you're anything like me...my starvation limit was 2 weeks. My net weight loss was still about 8 lbs., though, but it's taken me a LONG time to recover from the experience. I wish there were more food recipes, because I found them to be a lot more valuable in the end. I'm still giving this three stars, because the food recipes and general advice about the value of fruits, vegetables, and limiting grains is all very valuable as I plan my next, Reboot-free phase of my weight loss strategy. All in all, if you feel yourself going crazy and it isn't getting better after 3-4 days, be EXTREMELY careful how you proceed. And don't forget that part of your weight loss in a juice-only Reboot will be the loss of muscle mass. If you have muscle to lose, that's fine, but if you're trying to build up muscle after a long bout of illness like I was...run. I wish I'd known a significant loss of muscle mass was expected because it's a starvation diet; I never would've started. All of that said, it really does work...just be sure your body can handle it. And if it can't, don't stop; just think of ways to incorporate some of the food recipes into your menu...they will still change your life. That said, too, if you can't afford the juicer, don't worry. Get this book and try the food recipes and ideas about what to include and what not to include in your diet. I got way better results on the recommended foods than on the juicing (I only lost a few pounds juicing, but lost 20 lbs. with the food, half before juicing and another half later when I did another week - I regained half of it, too, during my post-juicing binge, though). Good luck!

Even if you’ve seen the film...
I was surprised by how helpful the book was though I had watched the film multiple times. This book is for folks who are serious about getting their lives back on track. The success stories are great, and all of the resources and information in the book are truly helpful. For instance, I see now that there are some veggies I should limit in my juices because of my thyroid. But great recipes and advice throughout. I’m on day 6 of my first “real” reboot now and I feel great, my arthritis is silent, I’ve lost 13 pounds, and I’m not taking ibuprofen every night like I had been for months. One thing I’ll say is to take transitioning into a reboot seriously; it took me a few weeks to prepare by weaning myself off of processed foods, caffeine, wheat, dairy products ... all of the things my rheumatologist told me to avoid a year ago. But it’s worth it, and Joe offers great advice for preparing for the fast. Thank you, Joe!
