I don't know when it was installed, but this fan was in our house in 1994 when we moved in. Now, it was dead. Although the controller at the wall still made the fan play some tones, the blades didn't spin. What to do? Trashing it was the chicken way out. So, I took down the fan and opened it up. As you can see in the picture, a polypropylene capacitor had exploded. First guess: the entire electronics might have fried. Second guess: Replace the capacitor, and see if that's the only thing needed to restore the fan's glory. Well, this capacitor had the same capacitance as the one removed, but with a higher voltage. That's good, but the replacement part was too big to fit in the same spot. I found an alternate location and hot glued it in place. I ran the wires to the PCB. This product worked great for me.
