It take one "C" battery that is installed on the underside of the base. The battery powers the clock itself and the earth and moon up top. **Q: How much plastic is used in this product ?** A: Not a lot. The base is solid wood. The gears in the clock and on top, are brass. I am not entirely sure about the columns, they may be plated metal or they could be plastic. The zodiac, month and day trim, and the sun are brass and/or aluminum. The Earth is plastic. The edge of the dial, bezel, and hands are metal (probably brass). I am not certain of the material used for the dial. I think it might be enamel (to simulate a porcelain dial). The quartz movement is accessible from the bottom and is encased in plastic. Most quartz clock movements have plastic gears inside. This movement is equipped with metal drive gears (to give it more torque) and utilizes a copper wire coil to create even more torque, necessary to power the heavier brass gears of the clock and tellurium portion, up on top. Clock is powered from a single "C" battery (not included). It is our recommendation, that you purchase and use an Energizer Max battery, to protect your investment in this clock. Energizer is creating strong batteries, that withstand leakage/corrosion, from increasing pressures within the battery, as it becomes depleted.
